About Govt Mineral Springs Guard Sta

Nestled in a grove of towering old-growth conifer trees, the Government Mineral Springs Guard Station is a delightful setting for guests seeking relaxation and recreation in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The Government Mineral Springs area has been a draw to recreation enthusiasts since the early 1900's. In 1910, S.D. Fox and the Star Brewing Company of Portland began construction of a hotel near Trapper Creek, which eventually became known as Government Mineral Springs. The popular resort boasted bath houses, Iron Mike Bubbling Springs, a dance pavilion, store, ice cream parlor, goldfish ponds and flower gardens. Early advertisements for the resort claimed the mineral water spas were capable of curing physical ailments. In 1935, the hotel burned to the ground. Camping remained popular at the site, and in 1937, the Civilian Conservation Corps significantly expanded and developed the public campground and built the guard station, which was used for Forest Service administration of the campground and other local recreational use. Today, the cabin provides a unique lodging opportunity. Guests should be aware that during the winter season, the cabin is only accessible via a half-mile trek on skis, snowshoes or snowmobiles from the parking area. There is no motor vehicle access from the road that leads to the cabin when snow is present on the road. Parking at the snow park is required, and requires a snow park pass. This pass can be purchased at local vendors.

Love staying at the guard station! The gas inset in the fireplace is a nice update.

Nice and peaceful as usual. Unfortunately one of the futons was broken and non functioning at the time of our visit. It made it a little uncomfortable to sit and visit on the evening.

The cabin was clean and well-maintained, and the kitchen has all the necessary items, including some large empty containers you could fill at the creek for washing water. Heat was already off for the summer, and there is definitely a lingering propane leak in the living room that makes you want to keep a window cracked--not a problem if it's warm enough outside. Thanks to FS staff and other visitors who all do their part to keep this a pleasant and welcoming place to stay. We'll be back!

The setting in national forest was great. We enjoyed walking around the woods. The cabin was clean, but needed some repairs, main the gas leak at the fireplace. Someone left the gas main on, so we smelled gas when we entered. After shutting off the gas main we left the windows open to clear the gas. It was fine after that. The campground itself seemed pretty dead.

Great location for hiking and exploring. Very quiet. Comfortable cabin, but could use a good deep clean and replacement of the gas lantern mantles. FYI, there is a gas powered fridge and freezer!

Would definitely stay there again!

We (4 adults + 2 kiddos) had a great time at this lovely cabin. We brought plenty of drinking water and filled up jugs at the stream for washing dishes. No fridge is colder than a NFS propane fridge! Plenty of pots & pans for cooking (too many for the cabinet), knives in need of sharpening (but that's to be expected), and enough plates/bowl to get by. If you are particular about mugs, bring your own (or fight over the one big one). We always camp with our gooseneck kettle, so coffee service was on point. We used one of the futons, in addition to all the beds upstairs, and found it fine. The nearby stream is perfect for summer exploration and cold soaking and in early July there were tons of berries (salmonberries, huckleberries, teeny tiny strawberries, trailing blackberries, blackcap raspberries). Huge, gorgeous trees nearby, and deep deep quiet at night.
