About Big Pines

The gentle Yakima River winds for 27 miles through massive basalt cliffs and rolling desert hills between Ellensburg and Yakima, Washington. The Canyon offers excellent wildlife watching, plant viewing, fishing in a Blue Ribbon trout stream, family river rafting and camping. The Bureau of Land Management administers over 9700 acres in the Yakima River Canyon area, including five developed river access sites. An overnight and day use fee is charged and reservations are accepted through www.recreation.gov, campsites will only be held until checkout time (11am) the next day. If reservation holder doesn't show up by then, the site is released. Hookups and potable water are not provided. The recreation sites are open year round, with the largest crowds filling the sites on hot summer weekends.

What Guests Are Saying

Big Pines Campground offers a beautiful and well-maintained setting along the Yakima River, with spacious sites and excellent access for river activities and nearby hiking. Guests appreciate the clean restrooms and the serene environment, ideal for birdwatching and fishing. However, some visitors noted issues with train noise, site reservation mix-ups, and a lack of privacy due to close campsite proximity.

It was a lot windier than I had anticipated, but it was a very pleasant weekend trip. Another thing to remember: it's very likely to be full sunlight all day. Don't forget sun protection (for instance, I forgot a hat!)

We were able to reserve our favorite site. The weather was better than expected. We filled our holding tank after 3 days and it would have been nice to be able to empty them eventually at a rest stop.
Looking forward for another visit.

It was a wonderful spot to just unwind. It had 1 trail open, but to me the highlight was that there were people playing music who were heading to the Blue Grass Festival in Goldendale. It's a nice clean spot though. However, would not reccomend if you are looking to constantly be doing an outdoor activity. Also, had ALOT of RV's. I was camping in a tent.

My only request is that we had to do a first come first serve on a friday of a weekend in the first week of May. it was stressful to just get one spot and then had to move to our "weekend" reserved spot for the saturday and sunday and monday of the following week. I get May1 MAY may be convenient for the calendars but we were feeling like a domino on Saturday morning at the camp ground.
