What Guests Are Saying

Gatewood Group offers a fantastic campground with ample space for groups, well-maintained areas, and excellent amenities like grills and fire pits. The scenery is beautiful, making it a great spot for stargazing. While the campground is quiet and restful, some visitors noted a high presence of chiggers.

Great site, convenient trash cans, clean bathrooms, and nicely paved road for most of the way up the mountain.

We stayed at Gatewood the weekend of 4/30 - 5/1. The site was in great condition with no visible trash. Bathrooms were in good shape as well. Enjoyed the solitude and quiet of the spot. We did our best of packing everything out that we packed in. Would definitely come back to this spot if its open again later this year.

We checked in at the main campground and were told that the combination lock for the campground had been stolen so there would be no way to lock the main gate behind us (bring a lock with you) which wasn't a big deal for the most part. Upon arriving at the campground we found the remnants of a fire still smoldering and quite a bit of garbage laying about (thanks for that previous campers)...trash bins were stuffed to the max as well. Now Gatewood is billed as a pet friendly place and for the most part it is but thanks to our previous campers, made it a nightmare for us. Onions everywhere along with cigarette butts all over the place....needless to say our 14week old puppy got into these before we have a chance to clean them all up and damn near died in the process (lethargic, couldn't stand or eat/drink). Nearest vet is in Elkins and managed to save this fellas life. $600 later we go back to the camp and clean the hell out of the place. Managed to have an okay time but obviously were worried about what he'd get into next. Gatewood is a nice place when its clean and taken care of but as with a lot of other places, suffers from the dirty human beings leaving their filth around for others to clean up. It's also obvious that American Land and Leisure (campground managers) don't really care about the places they are supposed to be caretaking or none of this would have happened.

Special shout out to the jackasses that left all the food and cigarette butts laying about....you are truly a fine example of the type of campers that have been ruining national forest campsites fro generations.

Grass has not been mowed all year. It was knee high in most places and with the wet conditions, cause us and everything we owned to be wet all weekend.

There are also gigantic boulders lining the perimeter that are unsafe for vehicles and a tripping hazard for humans -- especially since they were hidden by the grass.
