I was at Signal for only the one night and I checked in after 5 p.m. and was out by 9:14a.m. the next morning. I never had the opportunity to interact with camp personnel or host but that is totally understandable so my review is more historical. My one night stay was what I needed & it was good.
I'm a tent person & do not need electricity to camp. My preferred campground is Jenny Lake for the quiet peace of tent camping only, & location & access to the Jenny Lake store, trails, ferry, ranger station, but no showers or laundry. Signal Mountain is my next preferred, due to it's close proximity to Jenny Lake, String Lake, & multiple trailheads, showers & laundry & Signal Mountain Lodge. 3rd in progression of preferred campgrounds would be Coulter Bay. Coulter Bay is far north on Lake Jackson and has a number of amenities that Signal does not have. A general store, a Ranger Station, and a visitor center, and boat launches for those wanting that experience. Gross Ventre is the final campground but not one I have ever stayed at, and with Blacktail Butte between the campground and the Tetons, there is no view of the Tetons (so I believe) not a place I would want to stay. There is a fifth and sixth campground to the far north and outside of the park called Headwaters Campground @Flagg Ranch and the smaller Sheffield Campground USFS. The advantages of these locations would be the close proximity to the Grassy Lake Trailhead for access to the 3 Northern Wilderness Canyons; Berry, Owl and Webb Canyons.
My only real issue with the National Park Campgrounds in general is the current advanced reservation system. I understand why they went to the early online reservations but it does not take into consideration individuals and families who cannot plan that far in advance due to many hindering factors. I do believe the reservation system should have a hold on a percentage of sites for later reservations and some for first come first serve the day of or the day before
