About White Rock Mountain Recreation Area

Experience nature and adventure at historic White Rock Mountain! This National Forest Recreation Area features three unique and rustic natural stone cabins and a large natural stone lodge built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Each features a stone fireplace new, antique, and original wood furniture handcrafted by the CCC. Wind, rain and natural elements had caused the deterioration of the buildings over the years. In 1987 a volunteer group, Friends of White Rock, began a project to renovate the historic structures. With a lot of commitment and hard work, the lodge and cabins were restored to their original state in 1991. White Rock Mountain also offers nine primitive family camping sites. These easily accessible shaded campsites include tents pads, fire rings, grills, picnic tables and access to restrooms and water. Small RVs or pop-up campers can be accommodated at a few sites.

I'm at a bit of a loss on how to review this campground so bear with me. This was my second year in a row coming here with friends. Overall we had a fantastic time. The hosts are incredibly nice and willing to work with you on any concerns. The views are spectacular, it was safe during Covid because there aren't many campgrounds, and it is in the middle of nowhere which I love. We drove down to the mulberry river to swim and fish and we had an incredible day. HOWEVER, it is important to note, the group campsite has a copperhead infestation. We threw rocks to scare off at least 10 copperheads. One of my friends ended up stepping on one in the dark and got bitten. We rushed him to the closest hospital (1 hour away) and he is now fine. I think there must be a nest near the group campsite because we didn't see snakes anywhere else in the campground. I think if they bring in an exterminator or something to clear out the area around the group site that would be great if it's possible. Don't let this review scare you from coming though, there are no snakes near any of the other sites. You can tell this campground is amazing because one of my friends got bit by a copperhead and I'm still giving it 5 stars and I'd still be willing to return next year and he probably would too. I don't want to scare people away from this campground but I felt I needed to mention it because in all my research of this area I've never seen them mentioned at all. In other things, this campground has the cleanest vault toilets I've ever seen. In addition the spigots put out water that tastes better than the stuff that comes out of my fridge at home. I took a poll after the trip and all my friends said they had fun and would come back again. I had a great time both times I've come here and couldn't recommend it more. Make White Rock Mountain your next adventure, and you won't be disappointed.

This is an excellent but very off the beaten path campground. The gravel roads leading to the camp are very passable even for small cars, but don’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry as we averaged only about 15 mph (in a small car). The camp is clean and has one shared water hydrant and a vault toilet. There is no electricity in the campground. There is a well stocked but very overpriced “general store” for your basic camping needs. They will deliver large bundles of firewood right to your campsite once you purchase it at the store. The roads in the area (all gravel) are beautiful. There are several trails in the area. The hikes are wonderful but the trails are pretty primitive and sometimes not well marked. If you are into primitive camping in a remote area this is the place. During the three nights that we were there there were never more than three other camp sites occupied. Lots of quiet nature.
