About Glory Hole Recreation Area

Glory Hole Recreation Area is located at New Melones Lake on the Stanislaus River. The 12,500 surface-acre lake is the fourth largest reservoir in California and is situated along the edge of the Mother Lode, the rich gold vein that prompted the California Gold Rush of 1849. At an elevation of 1100 feet, the diverse and resource-abundant Foothill Oak Woodlands hug the 100 miles of shoreline. Popular activities on and around the large, yet uncrowded lake include fishing, boating, water skiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, sailing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, rock climbing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and picknicking. The New Melones Visitor Center offers year-round interpretive events and a museum highlighting natural and cultural resources.

No access to water to swim unless you have a boat. They moved our sites cause the bathrooms were closed and none of the water spikets were working anywhere near us. We had no warning that they were doing prescribed burns and we had people with asthma. The bathroom right next to us (we were in a handicap campsite right next to it) were locked at 6am the day we were do to leave. And led to us leaving early because we were tired of dealing with it.

The campground was nice an clean, the process of getting in was easy. I was disappointed the water was so far away, even if the lake was full it would not be easy to get to. It's definitely a place to go with a boat so you can be on the water. We also had issues with the toilets (that were nice enough) not working two days we were there. This was a pretty big inconvenience, they did bring in porta potties but that wasn't what shoulda been. It's not a do over place for us.

Great spot with great views. Convenient for short trips to Angel’s Camp, Sonora and Columbia State Park. Facilities were minimised due to COVID, but WCs were clean and usable. Water spigots at the campground ran dry after the first night which was inconvenient. Looking for a decent place to bathe and swim in the lake was the most challenging aspect of the trip.

Our campsite was nice: it was secluded, shady, and had a nice view of the lake. The campground itself is disappointing. Toilets weren’t flushing, water spigots weren’t working, and there was no camp host.

When we booked the sites there was a note that bathrooms near another site were closed.
So we picked sites near the open bathrooms, only to find out that those bathrooms were also closed.
There was a porta potty instead for 25 campsites.... and the one porta potty was close to full at the start of the weekend.

New Melones used to be a great camping venue in the past... it has gone down hill...... BLM needs to make it good again.... until then go somewhere else.

Very good location and awesome view. Area was green in April and it was little windy there. This was a very nice campground and I would like to go there again.

We camped at Big Oak Campground for two weeks. It was not a pleasant experience. During our stay the bathrooms were totally closed down on several occasions for a few days. It was an April/May stay and the weeds around the campsites were tall, dry and not cut down. I was concerned that smokers or campfires would set the park ablaze. Not cutting the grass earlier in the year especially in this very dry year in California was totally unacceptable . Finally, the maintenance crews did not lower the docks as the water levels changed and got lower. By the last week , half of the dock was out of the water. I would like to commend the bathroom cleaning contractors. When! the bathrooms were open ..... they kept them very clean and stocked. I do wish the Park service could add soap to the bathrooms, especially this year!
