About Glory Hole Recreation Area

Glory Hole Recreation Area is located at New Melones Lake on the Stanislaus River. The 12,500 surface-acre lake is the fourth largest reservoir in California and is situated along the edge of the Mother Lode, the rich gold vein that prompted the California Gold Rush of 1849. At an elevation of 1100 feet, the diverse and resource-abundant Foothill Oak Woodlands hug the 100 miles of shoreline. Popular activities on and around the large, yet uncrowded lake include fishing, boating, water skiing, wake boarding, jet skiing, sailing, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, wildlife viewing, rock climbing, hiking, biking, horseback riding and picknicking. The New Melones Visitor Center offers year-round interpretive events and a museum highlighting natural and cultural resources.

Very spacious and leveled site, lots of space between sites and the views are amazing . Park is well maintained, bathrooms are clean and roads are freshly paved. Dump station is very convenient and spacious which is a great plus when dry camping.

Campsites are very sloped. Not a lot of leveled area for tent. A lot of dried grass about 1-2 feet high. No lake access except driving to the marina/boat launch area. Lots and lots of pincher bugs.

Plus: no mosquitoes, decently clean bathrooms (lots of pincher bugs), breezy to windy condition (May 14-16, 2021)

Pros
- Nice campground and a very large lake
- Fairly level sites (most that we saw)
- Fairly clean bathrooms
- Some showers available

Cons
- Not enough staff available (almost none)
- After a long walk we found a staff employee
- Had a problem with our next-door neighbors breaking campground rules and asked the staff to help with this and they told us that we could change to another site - but that would have meant we paid for two campgrounds

We would stay there again.

This campground is run by the US Bureau of Reclamation. They have a long history of treating campers poorly. The infrastructure is poorly maintained and managed. For example, bathrooms either closed or malfunctioning, fish cleaning stations broken down, launch ramps not open and docks not properly positioned, campsites closed on a whim making campers change dates at the last minute, dump stations closed, routine maintenance not done in a timely fashion, and management won't answer or return phone calls and don't respond to emails. The management wanted to keep the campground closed all summer due to "public safety concerns." They tried to use Covid-19 as an excuse to keep the campgrounds closed so they wouldn't have to due any work. I had to contact the local US Congressman, tom McClintock, who then urged the US Bureau of Reclamation to open the campgrounds.

The bathrooms were locked overnight, with no indication of when they would be open. No signs pointing to another area. My son pooped his pants trying to find a place to go.
No ranger ever came by. The people across from us were screaming until 3 am.
