Sunset Campground (CA)

Very clean. Respectful campers. Lovely views

We love Sunset and Azalea campgrounds. This is our first time to Azalea and we loved it, nice campground. It was a little disappointing about the water main break but those things happen and we'll be back!

Sunset Campground is great for first time camping or camping with kids. They have flushing toilets, water to wash dishes and put out fires. There is a general store across the way as well as the information center. Site 38 was nice, I booked it because online it said it had a good view. But there are bushes blocking the view. So we had to walk a small distance to the next camp site to see the sunset over the city. The one thing I really didn't like, is that 38 is right next to 40. I mean right next to 40. It was practically the same camp site. It would be nice to book of you have more than 6 ppl and want to have your sites really close to one another.

I had read negative reviews and didn’t pay them any heed, but they were accurate with a good amount. This campground is Rowdy with a capital R. We were there 2 days, never saw a park ranger. If felt like the entire campground was a college spring break with the noise level well into the night. I love camping out in National Parks for the peaceful nature, and while the campground itself was beautiful, the atmosphere was anything but peaceful. Campsites pretty close together, but this site had rocks and trees behind it to offer privacy and kids enjoyed climbing. Close to a bathroom and flat for tent with shade. Bathrooms were small so there would be a line, wish they had soap. Overall it wasn’t a terrible experience, but it’s probably not a campground I would stay at again. I think this is the first National Park campground I’ve stayed at without any park rangers on site, and I feel like that made a big difference.

Camp Rangers were not present or enforcing rules which led to disrespectful campers being loud and not staying in their sites. Site boundaries are undefined and it’s hard to know where your site ends and the next begins. We showed up and there were tents in our site from the campers next door to us.

It was a great experience. The campsite had good shade and good view of sunset, restrooms were clean and the store and trails nearby.

Great campsite

My parents booked in Azalea campground and when they got to the site there was it on an aggressive angle and had nowhere to park their van. Azalea was all booked up and the host couldn't help. We found service and found was was available at Sunset and drove around. Once we found some mostly level and available sites we went back to the Visitor Center who had service and couldn't get through on the phone to cancel and reserve so my parents lost out on the cancelation of Azalea and couldn't use their senior discount to book at Sunset. Service was spotty so I booked the spot next to them incase theirs didn't go through. It was a stressful start to the trip. So we had 3 sites booked and only one was used. But at least we got a usable site.

Very pretty and good location. RV spot was a bit tight. Only complaint was no generator hours until 9:00 AM. Too late to start coffee and get going.
