About Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain Fire Lookout

The Mestaa’ėhehe (pronounced mess-taw-HAY) Mountain Fire Lookout is located directly off of Colorado Highway 103 west of Bergen Park and sits at the summit of Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain, which is an active communication tower site in Clear Creek County. In addition to being an active communication site, the area is a popular dispersed recreation use area with hiking, recreational shooting, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and camping. The lookout is a unique structure constructed of native granite which is situated at over 11,000 feet elevation and was built in the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The cab measures 14 feet by 14 feet and is completely lined by windows on each side and surrounded by a catwalk, all of which sit on top of a one story stone base.

Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain Fire Lookout offers a unique and magical experience with breathtaking views and well-equipped kitchen amenities, making it feel more like a hotel than traditional camping. Guests appreciate the cleanliness and upkeep by previous visitors, along with comfortable sleeping arrangements and thoughtful touches. Such a magical stay! We got this permit last minute and it was truly perfect. I am so impressed with how well past visitors keep the space and was surprised by all the cooking items (and microwave) that were in the kitchen area. Hope to stay here again soon!

Has to be one of the most unique experiences in the State of Colorado. Unbelievable views. Facility as everything you would need, more like a hotel room than camping. The only issues is other people hanging out around the site, they should really put up a sign explaining that this is a rented camp site.

Absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking!
My 9yr old and 7 yr old made the hike. It took a while because we booked the tower for 2 nights so we had to bring up a lot. The elevation is pretty high, the hike up is straight up. Bring lots of water.

The tower: theres no hiking trails to explore near, the tower is the destination. There are rocks to climb around though, that was fun.

Camping at the tower: there is a refrigerator, microwave and a stove! Theres also some pots and pans already. So you don't need to packup a bunch of cooking stuff.

The only negatives? It is a beautiful sunrise ande sunset spot. People dont respect that you reserved the tower and constantly try to open the doors and climb up to the top of the tower. Even after you tell them it is reserved and private, they still try to push themselves up the stairs saying they "just want a picture". Momma bear got pretty annoyed because it is 6am and I have children trying to sleep and these strangers cant respect reservations. Humanity is a 1 out of 5 stars, but the tower is 5 out of 5.
