About Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain Fire Lookout

The Mestaa’ėhehe (pronounced mess-taw-HAY) Mountain Fire Lookout is located directly off of Colorado Highway 103 west of Bergen Park and sits at the summit of Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain, which is an active communication tower site in Clear Creek County. In addition to being an active communication site, the area is a popular dispersed recreation use area with hiking, recreational shooting, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and camping. The lookout is a unique structure constructed of native granite which is situated at over 11,000 feet elevation and was built in the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The cab measures 14 feet by 14 feet and is completely lined by windows on each side and surrounded by a catwalk, all of which sit on top of a one story stone base.

Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain Fire Lookout offers a unique and magical experience with breathtaking views and well-equipped kitchen amenities, making it feel more like a hotel than traditional camping. Guests appreciate the cleanliness and upkeep by previous visitors, along with comfortable sleeping arrangements and thoughtful touches. Its a beautiful place. The comfort of your stay is dependent on whether there is power at the tower (not a guarantee) and how respectful the previous renters were.

Had to snowshoe up.
Didn't know there was a wind advisory that night until I reached the top (max 90ph winds).
Had I known about the wind advisory beforehand, I would not have gone up.
Luckily I had ear plugs and slept soundly (downstairs).
It's an amazing place. Just a little unsettling in high wind!

Awesome view and experience. Snow cover is not deep enough to require snowshoes, just boots. Awesome 360 degree views from the tower. The plug-in space heater that we had last year was missing, and the wall heater in the tower could not get it above 30 degrees inside with all the wind. The downstairs was warmer. A very unique experience.

Carried up 11 liters of water for 1 night for 2 people. Ended up using about 7 liters between cooking, cleaning, and drinking. Big front right burner on stove does not work. Sign/string gate to dissuade hikers from climbing to upper deck is missing/inadequate. Need a more permanent chain/wooden sign... too windy for a lamented paper one. But the draw down door worked well. Overall great place to spend the night and would highly recommend. I will be back for sure.
