About Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain Fire Lookout

The Mestaa’ėhehe (pronounced mess-taw-HAY) Mountain Fire Lookout is located directly off of Colorado Highway 103 west of Bergen Park and sits at the summit of Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain, which is an active communication tower site in Clear Creek County. In addition to being an active communication site, the area is a popular dispersed recreation use area with hiking, recreational shooting, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and camping. The lookout is a unique structure constructed of native granite which is situated at over 11,000 feet elevation and was built in the 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The cab measures 14 feet by 14 feet and is completely lined by windows on each side and surrounded by a catwalk, all of which sit on top of a one story stone base.

Stunning views, and comfortable and thoughtful amenities. What we were not prepared for the sheer amount of people who do not know it is a campsite, and therefore walk right up to the windows. Especially at dusk and dawn. They wander around outside the bathroom too. There are no posted signs indicating that this is reservable campsite, so no one has any idea what they are walking into.

Awesome experience. We visited in March. Arrived during a gorgeous spring day; departed in a wild winter storm.

Hike: Two miles approximately; nice up hill climb. We forgot our snowshoes and did pretty good despite. Took about 2 hours with some a few good stops. Encountered skiers and snowshoers.

Fire Tower: Basic accommodations with an incredible view. Four beds however the top area (2 beds) and bottom area (2 beds) is NOT connected by indoor stairs. You need to go outside to reach either level. The wind was mighty when we visited and shook the tower and roof and windows. Incredible star views when the cloud parted. We used zero degree bags and kept warm.

Overall a really cool experience.

Had a great time. First day it was so cloudy We couldn’t see 10 feet past the windows, but when we woke up the next morning, we saw a full moon and the sun rising pretty awesome. The people before us had left some water, food, burritos, appreciated that too. We left water and some dehydrated meals for the next lucky group. We slept downstairs as it is probably easier to heat, so if you’re gonna sleep upstairs, be ready for chilly weather due to plexiglass windows. We were glad we drove to the gate, as it was quite a hike carrying up water. Wouldn’t recommend driving to the gate unless you have a good four-wheel-drive and not a lot of snow expected.

We had such a lovely stay here! It was incredibly windy, so bring some ear plugs. The place was clean and stocked with some games! Wonderful to watch the sunrise and sunset! Highly recommend!
