Mestaa’ėhehe Mountain Fire Lookout

Fun place to spend some time with friends! Easy snow shoe to the fire tower and spectacular views. A nice change of pace.

It took half hour to open the push button lock. It was dark, 5 degrees and wind speeds of god knows how much. Please change the lock box! It was either frozen or worn out, almost impossible to open, and not pleasant to stand there in 5 degree weather and the thing does not open. The next gripe: Bring back the space heaters! Or, add about 10 more wall units. The one tiny wall unit does not even make a dent when it is cold. We were prepared with warm clothes and sleeping bags, and despite wearing every single item of clothing inclusive of gloves inside of the sleeping bag, I never stopped shivering all night long. I'd been there the previous year when it was cold, but the space heaters kept us warm and toasty, the small wall replacement there now is not sufficient!
But, you can't beat the uniqueness of the tower or the fabulous views! One of a kind, for sure!

Excellent experience. It would be nice if the east and west facing windows had pull-down shades to block the glaring morning and afternoon sun. It got so hot, we had to place the fan in the door to circulate fresh air. While the door was open, a hummingbird flew in to check out the red fire extinguisher. Definitely will do this again!
