About Camp Hale Memorial

Camp Hale Memorial Campground sits at an elevation of 9,200 feet, offering guests a wonderful setting for recreation and relaxation. Camp Hale is historic because the 10th Mountain Division, an unit of 15,000 men, trained here in mountaineering and skiing techniques during WWII. Some saw combat in Italy during the war. Most of the buildings have been torn down, but foundations and other "footprints" remain. The 99th Infantry Battalion (Viking Battalion) also trained at Camp Hale. There are interpretive signs along US Rt. 24, explaining the history and accomplishments of Camp Hale.

Absolutely beautiful scenery from our camper window! Very quiet campground few days we were there. The host was a hoot! Enjoyed visiting with her! The sites are large and wildflowers everywhere. Highly recommend this campground!

This campground is very remote and literally in the middle of a valley, not close to anything. The sites are wonderful - they are spaced apart and level. The bathrooms are very clean and the camp host was very nice to talk with. Absolutely no cell service. Very peaceful except the highway noise, but that fades into the background. We planned to stay 3 nights, but our event was in Leadville and we found going up and over a mountain pass to get there and luckily found accommodations in Leadville the last 2 nights. If you are looking for off the grid, then this is your place.

Great place to get away from it all (no cell coverage). One problem is that there is a lack of signage to the campground. We came from Leadville and pulled off at what used to be the old entrance to the campground (a map was still there showing that this is where the campground was) - but the road was blocked - so we drove on down the road to the next entrance (which had a sign on the road that this was the way to the campground). We could see way down the road to the Camp Hale ruins, but there also a road to the left (confusing to us). It would have been nice to have a sign pointing down the hill that this was the way to the campground. There was a small sign at the bottom of the hill pointing to the campground. The interior campground road was narrow.

A great last minute booking for a short trip, located between Vail and Leadville. There is an ATV rental next door/on the land of Camp Hale - great to use on the trails inside the overall site, as well as dirt bikes if you have them, instead of hiking (steep/narrow entrances to the paths that share with vehicles, also some are very open to sunlight). We hiked at Tennessee Pass instead, about a 10-15 minute drive and across from Ski Cooper.

Camp Hosts were amazing (Camp Store requires cash) and the grounds were really clean! It wasn't constant, but you could hear the highway from the campsites even at night, other than that it's peacefully quiet. A downside, if you're going for the historical aspect as well, is that some of the informational signs, in the small pull-ins by the main entrance, are really weathered, but the signs inside the grounds are newer.

Tracy and Anthony run a great campground. It was clean and organized. They had tons of local knowledge and were a blast to chat with. Thank you for making it easy to camp.

Once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation.
  • Fire Restrictions: Fire restrictions may be imposed at any time due to hot, dry weather conditions, at which time campfires and charcoal fires may not be allowed.

  • Click here for more information about White River National Forest
