The campsites had great space and well maintained trails. We loved our experience!

This was my 6 visit in 35 years. The island hasn’t changed. If you’re camping, it’s always hard at the beginning and end. But the in between is so rewarding.

Our fourth time camping at Cumberland but our first time camping in the dead of summer. It was definitely hot but bearable. Our biggest issue this time around were the ticks, we didn’t expect so many. My husband found 4 on me during the trip, so definitely recommend taking tick repellent, especially when under the canopy of the oak trees.

For Cumberland Island, we purchased the ferry tickets for us and our bikes, camping permit and a National Parks pass. The camping was great. Campsite was 3 miles from the dock but only a 10 minute walk to the beach. Highly recommend bikes with gears or an e-bike. Bug spray is a must. Only thing missing is a camp store because there is no where on the island to buy supplies, if you forgot something.

Everything was great until they padlocked the bathhouse.

We started by hiking down to Dungeness ruins. We then hiked to Stafford Beach to camp for the night. Day two we hiked from Stafford to Brickhill and set up camp. Later that day we walked to the first African Baptist Church. The next day we got up early, packed up Camp and hiked the road to sea camp for our last night on the island. We stopped at Plum Orchard and Stafford Cemetery our way. We saw lots of cool wildlife - horses, raccoons, armadillos, turkeys, deer, alligators, butterflies and birds - but there were so many ticks and mosquitoes.

Great National Park. A true hidden gem. Backpacked in 3.5 miles and no one around. Great place for hiking or backpacking for scouts to earn their merit badges.
