Kipahulu Campground

On our drive to Kipahulu campground, there was a big storm. I was a little nervous about the amount of rain, but we got to the campsite and the rain had stopped. In the morning, we woke up to the most spectacular view. Even though it was cloudy, the sunrise was beautiful, and the view of the ocean was breathtaking.
We decided to leave early since we saw a storm approaching. Kipahulu is a place I hope to return to. Even in rainy weather, it is a beautiful place.
Just remember to bring water, there is none on site :)

The campground is very nice and the location is beautiful. But Driving the route from west side at night was one of the most intense driving experiences I’ve had. The scenery (which I could only partly see in the dark) is dramatic and remote, but the road conditions demand full attention at all times.

Expect:
• Very narrow sections
• Sharp blind curves
• Limited or no guardrails
• Uneven pavement and occasional rough patches
• No street lighting
• Minimal traffic and almost no cell signal

Amazing campground.

Staff at check in was excellent and sincere on both days. Clean bathrooms and trash areas. Very nice campground and vibe.

I am really grateful the feral cats aren't a problem at this campground, for the sake of the nesting birds. Whatever the park is doing to manage the cat population so that they aren't hunting birds is great. There also weren't feral chickens. The camping is amazing--if we return my sisters and I would book a walk-in site because they were so beautiful. We saw a whale breaching, and we also saw some tortoise.

The ranger I spoke with at the visitor center, Walter, took the time to explain why the pools are closed to swimming and some of what scientists are finding about the reef health and improvements in water quality. He was generous and informative. It would be great to have an exhibit explaining some of the ongoing science alongside the existing cultural exhibits. The female ranger who checks in cars was also very kind and welcoming (forgive me for forgetting her name, and also I hope her team won the Super Bowl!).

Mahalo to the staff working at the park to welcome visitors. The park, grounds, facilities and trail are well maintained.

I’ve hiked the trails in the park multiple times before but never visited the campgrounds. I was really pleasantly surprised by how sweet and peaceful it was here. The park rangers were very friendly and helpful with suggestions. We camped in early February so we were lucky enough to see tons of whales right off shore. We enjoyed ourselves so much that we also booked another night. Three of the camping spots closest to the bathrooms have the unfortunate down wind breeze that can really curl the toes but luckily that’s not where we camped. My biggest complaint is that they didn’t have any showers or access to water available and it’s a 30min drive to get some. I hope that in the future this changes. I definitely plan on visiting again soon. The serenity of this space really soothes the soul.

What a beautiful place! We camped in #15 & it has a nice view of the trail leading to the cliff edge overlooking the ocean & the ten sites. There is no shade in the ocean side sites so if you want shade get a site bc along the tree line. The bathrooms were very clean with amazingly very little smell!
And the SUNRISE 😍 we were also there over the full moon & although there was some cloud cover on & off it was beautiful! The history at & around the visitors center is really cool. There is no place to get in the ocean at kipahulu but it is an amazing experience for 1 night & then back to Hana for ocean time!💙

Great spots, beautiful scenery, and a very clean campground!

Nice mainland style campground with both tent camping and car/van camping available (or at least not overtly prohibited). No water so plan to bring water or maybe get some at visitor center. There was a muddy dip at the entrance of camping area that could be filled in some if only the Nation Park Service had more budget to work with.
