Hard to argue with breathtaking views, sleeping under the stars, and listening to the crashing surf. I can’t wait to stay again!

If you’re planning to tackle the Road to Hana and want to experience it without feeling rushed, do yourself a favor and book a night at Kīpahulu Campground. We stayed on site 20, one of the dispersed campsites that you walk into, and it was nothing short of magical.

Imagine this: you’re perched right on the rocky coastline with the ocean spread out in front of you, feeling like you have your own private slice of paradise. It was peaceful, secluded, and gave us the perfect place to rest after a day of exploring.

The way we planned our trip, we broke the Road to Hana into two days. We drove out to Hana, spent the night at Kīpahulu, and then continued the next day. This meant we could take our time, enjoy each stop without worrying about racing against the sunset, and really soak in all the beauty of the journey.

As for the campground itself, it was clean, well-maintained, and had a really laid-back vibe. If you want a spot where you can fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up to a breathtaking sunrise, this is it. It’s definitely a gem that made our Maui adventure even more special.

So, if you’re looking for a place that lets you slow down and fully embrace the Road to Hana, I can’t recommend Kīpahulu Campground enough. It’s a little piece of paradise that turns a great trip into an unforgettable one.

The spaces are unnecessarily close together. It would be nice to have more private camping options. Otherwise the facilities were very clean and easy to find.

Site 16 is absolutely magical! I was warned ahead of time that it rains almost every night out there, still ignored the advice and did not hang up a tarp over my hammock. Big mistake. The sunrise was so spectacular it immediately left me feeling refreshed after a not so restful night. Hiked the Pipiwai trail the next morning, a must do. Only regret is not staying more nights!!

The kipahulu campground is a spacious area allowing for good separation between groups. We car camped in the parking area for the walk-in sites. Walk-in site 18 was a stunning patch of land; we wish we would have brought a ground tent to wake up to the unobstructed views of the sunrise in total seclusion but we still enjoyed all the site had to offer.

We spent two nights here. Very kind staff. We liked the car camping spots along the wall facing the ocean, 13 through 15.
