What Guests Are Saying
Thomson Causeway is praised for its beautiful riverside camping, clean facilities, and friendly staff, making it a favorite among visitors. Campers appreciate the spacious concrete pads, proximity to nature, and stunning sunsets over the Mississippi River. While some concerns were raised about noise from barking dogs and a less-than-friendly host, the overall experience is highly positive, with many planning to return.

This is a very nice campground. Mayflies were prolific but that’s to be expected by the river. Families with kids showed up on Thursday with their bikes and the parents hadn’t trained their kids to respect other people’s campsites. I’d say that was the only drawback to the experience.

Nice campground. Quiet. Much wildlife in stream off of the Mississippi River to view. Campfire could have been a little farther from trailer but ample wood available from camp host and easy to purchase. Would return

Great place on the river -- saw 5 tows go through the #14 lock which is close to camp -- clean place with low water pressure in the showers but the water was the right temp. -- I/we will be going back -- Voulonteers are the best!!

Very nice COE campground. Location is nice, not much locally - but Clinton IA is 9 miles away.
Campsites are level, and easy back-ins.

While the new pavement is nice, it's just a concrete island when it rains. We were there on July 10th when a huge storm came through. Lots of rain and high winds. Anywhere that was grass just became a lake. With big flooding, potentially over the causeway exit, we felt it safer to pack up and move up tp higher ground. So we all moved up by the restrooms. Nobody from the camp ground ever came to check on us. About 10PM a fireman drove in to see how we were. He gave us road conditions he was aware of, including 84 north with wires down across the road. With a second round of storms coming on Friday the 11th we went home. Our check out date was Sunday. So we lost our money for 3 nights. While rain is not the fault of the park, the way they handled it was poor at best. Just a week earlier a camp ground in Texas was swept away.

First, I was there during week following the july 4th holiday. The campground was not crowded.
Campsites all had level concrete pads, as well as utilities and water that I did not need. Rest room facilities were clean and there was a facility available for showers.
There were a number of hiking trails but the thing that attracted me was the bike trail access to the Great River Bike trail which provide a paved bike trail to lock 13 and beyond. The portion of the trail that passed through a sand prairie nature preserve was full of wild life and I had the 10 miles of trail to myself.
There was also an abundance of Gulls, Pelicans, Cranes also present in and around the camp ground.
All in all, I would rate my experience as Thompson Causeway as excellent for my purposes and I definitely plan to visit it again
