About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Despite the reduction in Federal Funding for the National Parks, all Rangers,Staff and volunteers were GREAT and always helpful with any ?’s or concerns. Spend time in the whole Park!! There are trails, bike paths, wonderful beaches on the ocean and bay.. the Visitor Center is very informative about the history and changes of the island, as well as in formation regarding the horses and other wildlife land and sea. Enjoy a very special place that is not commercialized simply Nature to be enjoyed. Camp if you can or go to the beach @ sunrise and enjoy the sounds and sights . Slow down and try to be in the moment. Unfortunately there were No Lifegaurds this year (funding cuts?)

This is the 2nd time we are camping here. It was nostalgic as we returned back here after 10 years. We were lucky we got oceanside campsite available at the last minute. Our campsite was number 86. Its a nice site- closer to the parking lot and toilet and a little walk to the beach. The toilets and shower areas were clean. We didnt see any horses come into the campsite at night/ during the day. Would definitely come camp here again next summer. The bugs and mosquitoes were a lot, inspite of using deet bug repellent we still had bug bites. But no complaints about it.

The staff were great and really helpful but unfortunately the place isn't the best kept. I understand the horses are wild and will defecate wherever they want but when a huge pile of horse feces is laying in a high traffic path to camp sites and outhouses/showers, it's not a good look. The showers could use an update. The handle you pull to get water flowing was all jacked up. I fixed the one I used while showering. Still, we had a good time and again the staff were extremely nice and helpful.

The bugs were absolutely awful. Even our strong bug spray with deet didn’t keep them from biting. Our poor dog got eaten up too, way too many biting flies and mosquitoes. Also, the entire loop had a couple shower stalls that only ran ice cold, and only one of them even worked. The mosquitoes were awful in there as well. It was all so bad, we actually had to leave a few hours after checking in and give up the money we spent to stay there. We were so excited to stay there, and will never be returning.

It was a very good and unique experience, but since it was our first time in a nearly wild setting, we faced some challenges. We were told to keep our distance from the horses, but some horses approached us and tried to eat our stuff (it was around 10 pm, and we were preparing something on fire). We didn’t know how to keep them away, so it was a little scary. I wish there had been better information about what we should do in such situations.

I love to camp in the midst of the horses. We certainly did get to see a show this time with stallion's racing and Their families in the camp sites.

The Bayside beach was lovely for sitting drinking coffee in the morning.

My only complaint would be the generators that run all the time. It's like camping next to a lawn mower. 10 o'clock became peaceful finally. I wish there were limits on how long they could run those things. It doesn't really make it feel like camping when you're listening to a lawn mower.

The Assateague Island National Seashore park lands and facilities are well maintained. For future visitors during the summer months, we want to relay and emphasize that the mosquitos, gnats, no-see-ums, and other bugs are extremely prevalent and aggressive at this camp site and in the Bay Area in general. We shortened our trip because even with significant mitigation measures (bug spray, camper with screens, citronella candles, full body clothing and mosquito nets), we still got bit up a lot. There’s nothing that the staff could do to prevent this, but wanted to make sure others are aware of how bad the bugs are this time of year.

Seeing the horses was amazing and the staff is incredibly kind. Beaches are gorgeous.

General

  • Entrance Fee: An Interagency (America the Beautiful) Pass, Assateague Annual Pass, or $25 entrance fee is required to enter the park in addition to camping fees. If you do not already own a pass you may pay the fee upon arrival.
  • Campers must check in at the Ranger Station upon arrival. Reservation holders who have not checked in by noon of the day following their reservation date are considered "no shows" and the site may be re-sold.
  • Wild Horses: Wild (or feral) horses roam free on the island. All food must be stored inside a latchable hard-sided cooler or inside your vehicle. Stay at least a school bus length (40 feet) away from the wild horses. Do not touch, feed or otherwise entice the horses. Learn more on the park's Assateague's Wild Horses web page .
  • Campsites must be vacated by on the day of checkout. Campers who desire to depart early MUST check out at the Ranger Station and be off the site completely or NO REFUND will be given. If it is an after hours emergency, please contact the campground host.
  • Late Cancellations: Customers who cancel a reservation the day before or the day of arrival will pay a $10.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee. Cancellations for a 1-night stay will forfeit the entire amount paid and will not be subject to the additional service fee.
  • Equestrian Campsites A & B: Horse Camp campers must bring their own horses. If you do not have a horse do not book a horse campsite.
  • Mosquitoes: Extreme mosquito/biting insect conditions are normal to the area; bring insect repellent with DEET.
  • Vehicle Limits on Drive-in Campsites: No more than two motor vehicles, or one vehicle with trailer, are allowed per drive-in campsite.
  • Vehicle Limits on Walk-in Campsites: No more than one motor vehicle allowed per walk-in campsite.
  • Vehicle Limits for Group Campsites: No more than 10 motor vehicles permitted per Group site.
  • Generators Prohibited: Generators are completely PROHIBITED in Bayside Loop B as well as in walk-in and group sites.
  • Tent Stake Recommendation: The park recommends using long tent stakes to anchor tents in the sand and against the wind.
  • Sleeping in a vehicle is prohibited in Walk-in and Group sites. Walk-in and Group campsites are tent only sites. Campers must sleep in the designated campsite. 
  • Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more. There is no firewood for sale on the island in the off season (generally mid-October - Memorial Day).
