About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. Outstanding! (except for one minor thing)
The park is obviously beautiful. I camped in the A loop Bayside camping area. The camp host graciously welcomed my son and I. They were so friendly and helpful. I was concerned about the mosquito/fly situation. While they were present, it wasn't bad at all. The poor horses seemed more bothered by the bugs than the people.
My only negative comment is the fact that everytime you leave the main gate of the park and return, you must represent you park pass and driver's license even though you are issued a large, blaze orange, dated window placard denoting your registered camper status. With the long lines at the park entrance to begin with, it would make more sense to have a "fast track" lane for already registered campers. (?)
Otherwise a wonderful experience!

So nice that we can camp on the beach. The horses were just roaming around. We brought our dog with us, it is great that this area is pet-friendly even in season. Loved our stay, would love to come back soon.

Had a great time. Weather was good and saw plenty of horses without having to look. Also got to see new colt, approximately 24 hours old. Great neighbors helped us back our, new to us camper, up in the dark. We have been tent camping previously. Also, only saw a few idiots not obeying the rules but rangers were on them pretty quickly.

Stayed in Oceanside site 007 and it was excellent. Right next to the boardwalk, a little bit of a dune to hide the tent against, and such great camp neighbors. Everyone was incredibly respectful of quiet hours and, in general, light usage etc. Assateague is a life long favorite and our campout this time was no exception. Horses came through at dusk and dawn, one band even going up the boardwalk to the ocean. I will say, some oceanside sites driveways can fill in with sand over the season. There is no road parking so you'll want to make sure your car doesn't struggle with that or speak with the camp host.

The first night I was on the Bayside, which is usually pleasant. This time my neighbors were very loud. I was in C47 (I think?), and the people in C48 and also other neighbors on the other side of the loop were blasting music until 2:30 am. They knew what they were doing, too, because they started the music at 9:45pm, just before quiet hours begin. The people on the other side of the loop were also very loud talkers, one of those families where everyone talks at once and no sentence seems to follow the last one. So at some point the other neighbors turned their music up higher to drown out the others. Anyway, music lasted until 2:30 am. It was loud enough to wake the dead so I'm not sure what the campground hosts were thinking. The same people who were loud also used my site to walk right through to theirs, even though it wasn't the fastest way. Just all around rude. The next morning there was a guy letting his dog run around without a leash and run around me while I was filling my water jug. I don't freaking care if it's "just being friendly," I care more about not disturbing horses that could stampede or kick someone. Dog people suck. They always think they can bend the rules for their dog and take up more space than what's allotted to them. The second night I was on the Oceanside and everything was fine. People always behave better on the Oceanside. The showers at the South Beach are broken btw.

You should not even try to call C45 a site for tents. There is almost no place to set up a tent. It also stinks like the vault toilet and since there really is no place with even smallest distance to the road to put up a tent there is no escaping even some of the odor.

It was so bad that even though we arrived just before dusk, we left without even trying to camp. This was a huge disappointment.

Entrance Fee: An Interagency (America the Beautiful) Pass, Assateague Annual Pass, or $25 entrance fee is required to enter the park in addition to camping fees. If you do not already own a pass you may pay the fee upon arrival.

Check-in: Campers must check in at the Ranger Station upon arrival. Campers who arrive after the Ranger Station closes must check in with the rangers before 10 am the next morning. Reservation holders who have not checked in by noon of the day following their reservation date are considered "no shows" and the site may be re-sold.

Wild Horses: Wild (or feral) horses roam free on the island. All food must be stored inside a latchable hard-sided cooler or inside your vehicle. Stay at least a school bus length (40 feet) away from the wild horses. Do not touch, feed or otherwise entice the horses. Learn more on the park's Assateague's Wild Horses web page .

Check-out: Campsites must be vacated by 11 am on the day of checkout. Campers who desire to depart early MUST check out at the Ranger Station and be off the site completely by 11:00 am or NO REFUND will be given. If it is an after hours emergency, please contact the campground host.

Late Cancellations: Customers who cancel a reservation the day before or the day of arrival will pay a $10.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee. Cancellations for a 1-night stay will forfeit the entire amount paid and will not be subject to the additional service fee.

Equestrian Campsites A & B: Horse Camp campers must bring their own horses. If you do not have a horse do not book a horse campsite.

Mosquitoes: Extreme mosquito/biting insect conditions are normal to the area; bring insect repellent with DEET.
