About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. I’ve been camping at Assateague just about every year since 2019 and still love it just as much today as I did then. Bringing or renting a bicycle is highly recommended for getting around the island and avoiding vehicle traffic. Walking works too, though! I also recommend renting a kayak from Assateague Outfitters and enjoying some time on the water. The ranger-led programs are very educational and worth checking out. The public beach areas get packed fast, but the camper beaches are always significantly less crowded. You have to get up to watch at least a couple sunrises during your trip! The ponies can often be found on the beach during sunrise, then they make their way to other areas. I personally find an OSV permit a necessity. I enjoy feeling like I have the beach to myself and driving in the sand can be fun. Make sure you have all the necessary items to do this! Everything else is standard year to year: use long tent stakes, make sure your tent is well ventilated (and waterproof in case rain comes through the area), be prepared for mosquitoes any time it is not windy, the vault toilets are just permanent porta-potties (they really aren’t bad!), and the showers are refreshingly cold.

My site was A7 on the bayside. The horses were hanging out there all the time. The beach was nice, good weather but the waved was strong. The sunset was amazing. The bathroom is clean. They rounding a lot to be sure the everything was ok. This is an amazing place to have a couple days off to enjoy Mother Nature.

My stay was amazing, we had a group camp site that was perfect. Neighboring campers were very friendly, we encountered the beautiful horses and watched dolphins from the beach. The weather was cool for the time of year that we went with some rain which I am grateful for. I do recommend extra stakes for sand to keep your tent down in the sand, it made a big difference against the wind. And I absolutely recommend staying for more than one night. There is plenty to see and the time flies by. This was a very memorable first time camping experience for myself and the teenagers who did not mind that their phones had died!

A great experience. Everything was wonderful except for the bathroom. The Government would condemn everyone's home if the bathrooms were kept like you keep them. Every hear of scrubbing or using a pressure washer to clean the showers? They were shameful, moldly - totally uncalled for. Just laziness on the Government part.

Campsite 104 was excellent! Private and serene. The horses showed up every night at sunset and were on the prowl for food. Use the boxes and keep them locked! We often saw them in the morning too. The birds tried to raid the storage box (they can fit through the slats) so keep you food covered!

The flies were vicious- horse flies, no see ums, gnats - you name it. It was still worth it. Even DEET did not work.

Sunrise on the beach was magical. Fell asleep to the sound of the waves. The stars were not blocked by light pollution.

Bring a tarp/screen house for shade. Don’t bother with the tiny metal stakes that come with your tent. Invest in some good ones and bury them to keep your tent secure because there is a constant breeze.

Stop by the visitor center and watch both films. We loved the nature walks on the bayside.

I will definitely be back!

We arrived in the rain. Our site was postage stamp size, just large enough for our trailer and tow vehicle.
The grass around our table and fire ring was at least a foot tall. The Site area was very small with bushes defining the borders.
There were clouds of mosquitos! If the grass had been cut and the bushes cut back a little it may have been doable but as it was we weren't willing to endure the mosquitos so we left.
Good news is that we got a partial refund

General

  • Entrance Fee: An Interagency (America the Beautiful) Pass, Assateague Annual Pass, or $25 entrance fee is required to enter the park in addition to camping fees. If you do not already own a pass you may pay the fee upon arrival.
  • Campers must check in at the Ranger Station upon arrival. Reservation holders who have not checked in by noon of the day following their reservation date are considered "no shows" and the site may be re-sold.
  • Wild Horses: Wild (or feral) horses roam free on the island. All food must be stored inside a latchable hard-sided cooler or inside your vehicle. Stay at least a school bus length (40 feet) away from the wild horses. Do not touch, feed or otherwise entice the horses. Learn more on the park's Assateague's Wild Horses web page .
  • Campsites must be vacated by on the day of checkout. Campers who desire to depart early MUST check out at the Ranger Station and be off the site completely or NO REFUND will be given. If it is an after hours emergency, please contact the campground host.
  • Late Cancellations: Customers who cancel a reservation the day before or the day of arrival will pay a $10.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee. Cancellations for a 1-night stay will forfeit the entire amount paid and will not be subject to the additional service fee.
  • Equestrian Campsites A & B: Horse Camp campers must bring their own horses. If you do not have a horse do not book a horse campsite.
  • Mosquitoes: Extreme mosquito/biting insect conditions are normal to the area; bring insect repellent with DEET.
  • Vehicle Limits on Drive-in Campsites: No more than two motor vehicles, or one vehicle with trailer, are allowed per drive-in campsite.
  • Vehicle Limits on Walk-in Campsites: No more than one motor vehicle allowed per walk-in campsite.
  • Vehicle Limits for Group Campsites: No more than 10 motor vehicles permitted per Group site.
  • Generators Prohibited: Generators are completely PROHIBITED in Bayside Loop B as well as in walk-in and group sites.
  • Tent Stake Recommendation: The park recommends using long tent stakes to anchor tents in the sand and against the wind.
  • Sleeping in a vehicle is prohibited in Walk-in and Group sites. Walk-in and Group campsites are tent only sites. Campers must sleep in the designated campsite. 
  • Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more. There is no firewood for sale on the island in the off season (generally mid-October - Memorial Day).
