About Assateague Island National Seashore Campground

Assateague Island National Seashore is a 37-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. Famed for its wild horses, this barrier island is a constantly shifting ribbon of sand, altered daily by powerful wind and waves. Assateague Island, dedicated as a National Seashore on September 1, 1965, lays claim to a long and rich history. Today's visitors can explore sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Only a couple of miles wide at its broadest point, the island's terrain offers shelter to the famed wild horses as well as sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds such as the great blue heron and snowy egret. Favorite recreational activites include fishing, surfing, beachcombing, swimming, and sunbathing.  The Over-Sand Vehicle (OSV) Zone at Assateague Island contains miles of unspoiled beaches managed by the National Park Service to accommodate OSV enthusiasts and other beach goers. The Assateague Island National Seashore, Assateague State Park, and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge work together to manage and protect this unique, diverse strip of land. As never been to Assateague Island, I was unaware of the fact that you must climb a huge sand dune in order to camp oceanside. A lot of exhausting trips to get gear to spot. Standard wagons/ wheels do not work. Very windy, cold (especially at night) even in 95 degree days. Very pretty, but hard to see horses unless in the right spot at the right time. Site 056 Oceanside.
Our other group had a good time bayside, but please be aware the bugs/ticks are horrible and it was very warm. Minimal air flow. Site B28 Bayside

We stayed in one of the walk-in loops. Lots of work getting everything to our site (bring a beach wagon to help haul your gear!) but it was worth it. It was quiet, peaceful right next to the ocean. Bathrooms were pit toilets but they were well maintained and clean. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

Site A24 was so nice and peaceful. I wanted a site with a little more space and not so close to others. This site was perfect!
The first night we were there the horses came. My oldest daughter heard something outside our tent. So I checked to see what it was, come to find out it was a family of horses. The dad walked around the tent with the mama as the baby stayed next to my van.
I have little kids so we didn't go to the ocean side but we did go to the bay side alot. My kiddos loved that side because there weren't any waves and the water is so shallow. Plus you can see the bottom which I love.
The only downside is the mosquitoes but I knew that from visiting in the past. Those bugs are like little vampires biting every second that they can.

We love Assateague And have been there many times. Being able to drive on the beach is why we go. We are not fisherman, but enjoy the peace and quiet of sitting, reading and walking on the beach and simply watching the waves.

We had a campsite that you walked to, and I have Stage 3 heart failure 💔 so my husband had to do most of the work but we stayed two nights and loved it !! I will say pack light the sand kicked our butt and pack lots of deet we did buy the firewood for the park and it was wet so stop on the way in at the store also beware of all the horse poop, I didn't mind but I think they could do better it was all in front of restrooms and that was annoying to see people with Children trying to navigate!! But we had an amazing time and also enjoyed the horses on the beach for the day, the weather was gorgeous !!

My only complaint would be that you need to change your reservation policy to state that if an individual does not check into their reserved site within 24 hours of first day reservation without calling or registering, then they should forfeit their site. There have been way too many times this and last year where I would be staying on the island and at least 1/3 of the sites would be empty because of no shows who did not bother to cancel. There is no place I know of, including hotels and other campsites that would allow this to continue. Almost all the places I go camping have a 24 hour check-in policy. If you don't check in within 24 hours you forfeit your site and money. Otherwise everything at the park is wonderful. Not really sure I understand why you are cutting the grass though. I always hear about the limited food supply for the horses on the island and yet I see that you guys are now mowing the lawn at the campsites. I think this is not a good thing for the horses and is a waste of tax payer money. Spraying for ticks and mosquitos is a different thing altogether. I am glad to see you are now spraying to protect the children, dogs and other animals from tick borne diseases. Thanks in advance for your attention to this review. Overall, any day on the island is a GOOD DAY!

General

  • Entrance Fee: An Interagency (America the Beautiful) Pass, Assateague Annual Pass, or $25 entrance fee is required to enter the park in addition to camping fees. If you do not already own a pass you may pay the fee upon arrival.
  • Campers must check in at the Ranger Station upon arrival. Reservation holders who have not checked in by noon of the day following their reservation date are considered "no shows" and the site may be re-sold.
  • Wild Horses: Wild (or feral) horses roam free on the island. All food must be stored inside a latchable hard-sided cooler or inside your vehicle. Stay at least a school bus length (40 feet) away from the wild horses. Do not touch, feed or otherwise entice the horses. Learn more on the park's Assateague's Wild Horses web page .
  • Campsites must be vacated by on the day of checkout. Campers who desire to depart early MUST check out at the Ranger Station and be off the site completely or NO REFUND will be given. If it is an after hours emergency, please contact the campground host.
  • Late Cancellations: Customers who cancel a reservation the day before or the day of arrival will pay a $10.00 service fee and forfeit the first night's use fee. Cancellations for a 1-night stay will forfeit the entire amount paid and will not be subject to the additional service fee.
  • Equestrian Campsites A & B: Horse Camp campers must bring their own horses. If you do not have a horse do not book a horse campsite.
  • Mosquitoes: Extreme mosquito/biting insect conditions are normal to the area; bring insect repellent with DEET.
  • Vehicle Limits on Drive-in Campsites: No more than two motor vehicles, or one vehicle with trailer, are allowed per drive-in campsite.
  • Vehicle Limits on Walk-in Campsites: No more than one motor vehicle allowed per walk-in campsite.
  • Vehicle Limits for Group Campsites: No more than 10 motor vehicles permitted per Group site.
  • Generators Prohibited: Generators are completely PROHIBITED in Bayside Loop B as well as in walk-in and group sites.
  • Tent Stake Recommendation: The park recommends using long tent stakes to anchor tents in the sand and against the wind.
  • Sleeping in a vehicle is prohibited in Walk-in and Group sites. Walk-in and Group campsites are tent only sites. Campers must sleep in the designated campsite. 
  • Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more. There is no firewood for sale on the island in the off season (generally mid-October - Memorial Day).
