This is my favorite campground ever. I have been visiting this campground for over ten years. The facilities are nice and clean, the location is perfect (15 min. walk through forest and dunes to get to pristine beach from the Walk-in Loop area), the sites are well maintained and the park staff is AWESOME! To secure a site, you must do so through this website (Recreation.gov) six (6) months in advance of your camping trip (I make mine usually in February counting six months before the week I am able to take vacation). Securing a reservation is not easy - one must do so first thing in the morning as soon as they make the site reservation availables. It helps to know your camping dates and the Loop you would like to camp in advance.
There are plenty of activities in the area of Sleeping Bear Dunes, including hiking and biking, kayaking, restaurants, ice cream places, convenient stores and supermarkets around Empire and Glen Arbor towns (I usually go north). My family vacations in the area are always memorable. Definitively a hidden gem in northern west Michigan.

The shower was sufficiently hot. I was able to sleep in my car, which gives my 68 year old back more support and comfort than sleeping on a pad and sleeping bag over gravel. Fellow campers were quiet. Trails were marked adequately.

Platte River Campground is my favorite place to spend time. The staff is friendly and the sites are clean and spacious.
You don't feel like you're packed in like sardines. The bathrooms and shower are cleaned daily and always well stocked.

Clean. Large campsites with room for 4 small 3 person tents or one large tent and a canopy. Campground is 12 minutes away from grocery and a little farther for restaurants. Reasonably close to Empire
