What Guests Are Saying
Grand Island Cabins offers a beautiful and remote setting, with clean, well-maintained cabins that feature convenient amenities like a propane grill and ample firewood. Guests appreciate the proximity to stunning beaches and hiking trails, as well as the cozy interiors that provide warmth and comfort. While the lack of potable water and higher nightly rates are noted drawbacks, the overall experience is delightful, making it a highly recommended destination for nature lovers.

We stayed at sunset cabin in Feb. A beautiful and remote setting. The only draw back is no potable water. There was plenty of clean snow to melt but is fuel intensive. The cabin was in great condition upon our arrival and already warmed up. A very welcomed surprise after a 5 mile snowshoe treck in. We had a wonderful 3 night stay and will be going back next winter weather permitting.

Sunset Cabin is clean and comfortable with a nice area around back for cooking and campfires. The propane grill is a huge plus and the park service provided more than enough fire wood. The beach is a 5 minute walk. Water spigot is a 10 minute walk. North Beach is a 7.5 mile (tough) hike.

The nightly cost of the cabin was a little pricey. My hotel room, the night before, was only $13 more which had electricity and running water. (I only include this, because those things cost money, therefore I expect to pay more). Regardless, the solitude of the cabin area on the island and the proximity to the beach, firewood and freshwater was great. The outhouse and cabin were both clean. The unexpected bonus of a propane grill was convenient after a long day of hiking biking, swimming and exploring. On a side note, the camper before us left the propane tank open after leaving. Maintenance may want to include a note to campers, to "close the propane tank after use" to prevent accidents. Overall, all our stay was wonderful and we would recommend to others.

Cabin was excellent with an amazing location roughly 100 feet from the shore of Lake Superior. Merchant beach was picturesque. The screened-in porch of the cabin gave us a nice respite from mosquitoes. The bunkbeds were large and the cabin is very well-built with solid double-paned windows. The pilot light of the heater kept the whole cabin toasty even though we had the thermostat set to the off position. Bring enough light sources for your level of activity - we had lots of lanterns. There were 5 chairs on the porch during our stay, something we were concerned about (we brought our own, but certainly didn’t need to). We carried our gear the 1 mile down the trail with the assistance of a wagon (you can rent from the ferry company). The park ranger came by one day of our trip and dropped off fresh firewood and even took our garbage! The outhouse was very convenient for our group of 5 people (make sure to bring enough toilet paper). The gas grill provided was also located in the screened in porch with plenty of backup propane. My friend who lives in Colorado said this was the easiest camping experience he has ever had! Didn’t see any bears, but that’s okay. Overall an excellent experience.

This cabin is perfect! It has everything needed and stocked with firewood and a gas grill with plenty of gas. The only things I would recommend is bring a large cast iron skillet or griddle to provide a cooking surface in the grill. Also hooks high on the walls or actual lines strung across would be very helpful for the placement of lights etc as the cabin is dark inside. Aside from that 1 mile is just the right distance from the ferry and Merchandise Beach is beautiful! The mountain biking was great and cell service was excellent! We had a lot of rain so we're able to hang out and watch movies after getting tired of euchre!

Beginning in fall and throughout winter, ferry service to the island is closed. Access to the island is only by personal watercraft, or, if the lake is frozen, access via foot or snowmobile. Please call ahead to find out if there is ice or open water. Crossing Lake Superior to get to Grand Island is at your own risk. Once on Grand Island, cabins can be accessed by hiking, biking, skiing, or use of snowmobile depending on the season. Sunset Cabin is located on the West Rim Trail approximately 3.6 miles from the island ferry landing.
