What Guests Are Saying
Grand Island Cabins offers a beautiful and remote setting, with clean, well-maintained cabins that feature convenient amenities like a propane grill and ample firewood. Guests appreciate the proximity to stunning beaches and hiking trails, as well as the cozy interiors that provide warmth and comfort. While the lack of potable water and higher nightly rates are noted drawbacks, the overall experience is delightful, making it a highly recommended destination for nature lovers.

(Merchant) Nice cabin, albeit without electricity or water. To reach the cabin there's a decent trail, and it's less than a mile from the ferry landing. You can rent a wagon to haul your gear. Gas grill is very nice, and it's inside the screened-in porch. We enjoyed it, and it was relaxing and restful after a few days of strenuous back country canoeing in Sylvania Wilderness. The lakeshore is nice, and we went for a short swim. We might go back with some friends after the pandemic is over. There's lots of room.
Only gripe is that it's quite close to the trail, so you see and hear a few passers-by, which is related to the one other problem--which is really irritating during the pandemic--that some of them want to use the cabin's outdoor privy. It seemed to us that certain groups knew of it in advance and approached it without hesitation, as though its location had been shared beforehand... but when we informed them it was private, they were all polite and didn't complain. We finally posted our own sign on the door to ward people off. The owners haven't done that. Probably they are afraid if they do people will get mad and vandalize the place.

This cabin far exceeded my expectations. I had rented it as a back up plan in case of rain and planned to store my gear there as I went about on the island. The spot was so great that I ended up staying there the whole time

Beginning in fall and throughout winter, ferry service to the island is closed. Access to the island is only by personal watercraft, or, if the lake is frozen, access via foot or snowmobile. Please call ahead to find out if there is ice or open water. Crossing Lake Superior to get to Grand Island is at your own risk. Once on Grand Island, cabins can be accessed by hiking, biking, skiing, or use of snowmobile depending on the season. Sunset Cabin is located on the West Rim Trail approximately 3.6 miles from the island ferry landing.
