What Guests Are Saying
Hurricane River Campground offers a beautiful and quiet setting with well-maintained, spacious campsites located near Lake Superior and hiking trails. Campers enjoyed the clean facilities, scenic views, and proximity to stunning sunsets and the beach. While some experienced challenges with the reservation system and biting flies, many found the campground to be a lovely retreat and a great base for exploring the area.

Beautiful, small, quiet campground. The mosquitoes were really bad when we were there, but the park employee told us that's unusual. We only had pit toilets, but the park employees kept them really clean. We had trash and recycling conveniently located in different parts of the campground. There was a nice trail from the Upper Loop to the Lower Loop and from there we get access to the beach and the North Country Scenic Trail that connects to Twelvemile Beach and Au Sable Light Station. The Hurricane River Beach was wonderful and we had fun watching the brook trout going up the river.

We couldn’t even end up camping because of the overwhelming number of mosquitoes. We had to turn back around and get a hotel room. The campground was ok, looked small and not worth the camping experience

Campsite was very nice, but 37 miles from Munising, if taking a boat tour. We didn’t spend a lot of time at camp. There were mosquitos, as the site was wooded. We weee across the road from the beach, which wasn’t visible through the trees, but a very short walk. Restrooms were reasonably clean

Campsites were very nice. We stayed at #9. #10 has a view of water if you position your tent that way. Loved being across the road from the lake with the sounds of the waves as you fall asleep. We went early (May 19-21) and we found no trail maps at campground entry or camp wood to buy. We had to buy wood at some roadside place. Many small roadside spots were still closed being it was so early in the season so be prepared and buy some before you enter park area. No cell service, which was ok for us but if you need it don’t plan on it. Vault bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. Bear boxes located throughout park to store food for people who didn’t camp with a car. Campsite also has bear proof garbage boxes. Just would have been nice to have a trail map for our hikes. Would definitely stay here again.

This campground is a gem. The upper loop is less traveled but further from the lake (still a short walk). The lower loop is just about on the lake. A trail runs thru it, so you often see hikers and backpackers, but it still feels like you're away from everything.
Be mindful: cell signal is not existent here.
In the lower loop, some sites feel more private than others. I was in site 9 and while wooded, I was surrounded on three sides by the campground road. In the off season, it was still quiet, but I can see how this can get annoying for some people. Still, with only 12 sites in the lower loop and 10 in the upper, this is much less crowded than Twelvemile Campground.
