What Guests Are Saying
Hurricane River Campground offers a beautiful and quiet setting with well-maintained, spacious campsites located near Lake Superior and hiking trails. Campers enjoyed the clean facilities, scenic views, and proximity to stunning sunsets and the beach. While some experienced challenges with the reservation system and biting flies, many found the campground to be a lovely retreat and a great base for exploring the area.

We stayed at the upper campground site #1 for a night in September. Great location for nearby trails & views. Bit further from the toilet than the rest, but loved the seclusion from other sites. Quiet, very enjoyable.

We are new to camping - we arrived late and didn't understand that there wasn't a check-in area. Felt odd!!! The spot fit well and hopefully some day, they will have electric and water facilities. The only negative was the bathroom was so bad that I went back to camper and used our bathroom.

Our campsite (number 11) was nice and very serene/quiet. It had a raised area for our tent, a fire pit with a grate on it for cooking, a picnic table, and plenty of space for our car. We were tucked into the trees which was nice for privacy (we could see our neighbors through the trees, but the sites were off-set so we weren't right next to each other). We were two sites down from the bathrooms which was very convenient, and they were in good shape for pit toilets.
We were right across the road from the beach access path (a one minute walk and you were on the beach). You had to go down a small sand hill to get there but it was really easy, and the beach was beautiful. The Hurricane river was close by too, and it was fun hanging out where the river met Lake Superior. It got really windy one night we were there, and you could hear the waves from the lake, but we were protected at the campsite, and felt no wind by our tent.
We were also a 20 minute drive to Grand Marais, so it was easy to pop into town when needed. We tried the Grand Marais Tavern for dinner one night - it was great (I would recommend the white fish basket). All in all we had a nice time!

Amazing location with hiking trails connecting to the campgrounds. The upper campground was only 0.2 mile hike to Lake Superior. You could hear the waves of Lake Superior from the lower campground.

First time camping in America as an adult. I loved how far apart the campsites were and how quiet and peaceful it was. Very short hike to the lower campground and water which was breathtaking. Very glad we were able to get reservations here!

Beautiful campground on the shore of Lake Superior. Trailhead to the Au Sable Lighthouse starts there. Easy to get to Grad Marais, the Log Slide Overlook and Sable Falls.

Upper loop is a good alternative to lower loop, even if you’re not on the water. It was a nice little site.

We loved our visit. It was our first time to Pictured Rocks. We were in the upper campground and found the site very pleasant.
