What Guests Are Saying
Ausable River Camping offers a beautiful and serene environment, with spacious, well-maintained sites and picturesque views of the river. Campers appreciate the remote, rustic charm and the opportunities for fishing and hiking. While there are some concerns regarding ticks, road conditions, noise from generators, and occasional issues with campsite bookings, many visitors still express a strong desire to return for another experience in nature.

Beautiful view and wide enough for our 26 foot camper to be backed in.

I love the sound of the waterfall north of the site . Real cold fresh water . Just beautiful view like no other. If your not good with a high slope to water edge then reconsider, but I personally loved it.

Beautiful site! Very private, only saw one other person the whole time who was walking by to 085W. Short but steep hike to the site, and steep bluffs down to the river around the site itself. Directions to the site weren’t clear online but lots of good signage to get you there off Bissonette Rd.

Great, easy to access walk-in site. The walk from the drive to the site is about 10 minutes or less. The terrain is hilly so your carts are best left behind. The site itself is spacious and shaded with lots of mature trees and downed branches for firewood. It's set up on top of a bluff a few hundred feet overlooking the river. You can easily scramble down to the river, but not a good site for accessing the site for any boating. There's a creek about 5 minutes up the trail for water, and you're set quite aways away from your neighbors at site 085W. Sound travels easily from the nearest boat-in site across the river, but you can only make out each other's campfires visually. We hung our food and trash, and had no encounters with raccoons or bears. Lots of great bird watching, including a nearby nesting family of swans! About fifteen minute drive from Lumberman's Monument, which has a great dune trail for easy hiking.

The Ausable primitive river camping is a fantastic wilderness experience for the lower peninsula of Michigan.
The signage for campsites can be improved as some signs are down and legitimate campsites with steel firepits, etc.. do not have a sign. Perhaps posting the campsite numbers on trees, or something more substantial than the thin fiberglass posts driven more than a foot or so into the ground would help to improve the permanence of the signage?

Great drive-in site! Super easy to find and access, but lots of privacy. Site is mostly sunny and wide open with a small set of stairs to the river. Beautiful river views, great stargazing and a well-kept site. Only (very minor) complaint is the fire ring is so high! You have to build your fire quite high to be able to see and sit around it.

Great site. Very private and spacious. The only downside is the amount of boat traffic. One morning bass boats zoomed before 7AM.
