Beautiful campsite and very well maintained. It's about a half mile hike in. You do pass a spring on the way in. Bugs were not bad but there were more people on the water at night than I would have expected.

The AuSable River has earned my respect. So saying, I have been kayaking and canoeing for over twenty years. I have seen and done every major river system in both peninsulas. The last was the AuSable. The river has my profound respect. It is peaceful and quiet. It us rejuvenating on a soul deep level. I need that every so often... dont you? I highly suggest and recommend it.
.... I could have done without the pounds, but they were a fantastic challenge.
Make a multi day trip out of it. I did. So do you, to really experience it. I also recommend staying at the Forest Service campgrounds, the rustic and craft access only sites. They are the best. AuSable Loop Campground is also amazing.

Large and private campsite with a wider trail down to the water. Many trees but the water can be seen. Easy drive in road and not far from the main road.

Beautiful area! We camped with three young kids and enjoyed the dunes at Lumbermans the best. We canoed, swam and drove oit to the beaches in Oscoda. Peaceful and scenic. There was however some garbage left in the firepit and some in the woods. Seriously people don't ruin it for others, clean up after yourself!

The sites at Sawmill point are wonderful. They are huge with beautiful views on the lake. Access to the lake at our site was a little difficult. The pit toilet was clean and so was the site. It has no picnic table. My biggest beef with the place is the reservation system. There seems to be no first come first serve at this site but that is not at all obvious once you are on location. There is no place to tag the site as reserved and we watched people coming in thinking they had found a place, only to be chased off once the people arrived who reserved it. Many sites stayed empty for a large portion of the time. I think the sites are so cheap that people reserve them and then not bother cancel them if they decide not to come leaving the site unusable for people who would love to come. Making them slightly more expensive and finding a way to tag the sites as reserved may help that.

Designated campsites are spread along 55 miles of river shoreline between the AuSable River Access at 4001 Bridge (7 miles northwest of Glennie, MI) to near the Whirlpool AuSable River Access (4 miles west of Oscoda, MI).
