We did experience a situation over the 4th of July with disturbing tenters next to us. Another group of campers did have to call 911 as the situation was escalating. I have to commend the quick and efficient response from the aitkin sheriff's department. They handled the unruly campers quickly and without futher problems. Once they were removed from their tent site our experience at Big Sandy was wonderful, as always!

My only complaint is that there is not flush toilets and showers on the North side and the dump station is not good, so do yourself a favor and fill and dump on the Southside. Not the fault of campground, but at end of June all the bugs were horrible. Really do love this campground. Many fun things to do of you have a boat and it has a beach.

I was disappointed to see no updates after being “closed for camping 2 yrs” grass could of been planted in at least half of each of the sites, it truly was dirt camping, which makes everything dirty, including feeling dirty. I have been going there for yrs, the weeds have taken over going down the steps by the boat docks it used to be so nice they used to even cut the grass along the lower edge. Weeds taken over flower beds ect. The weeds in the lake by the docks, now just paths to get into the dock area, hard to bring boats in & to fish. I did notice less chipmunks… yea! Overall it is a nice affordable place to camp.

We have been going to this campground for many years. We were unable to go thr past couple since it was closed. The only issue is Mosquitoes they are bad here with the river and lake. Otherwise the campsites, restrooms, and other facilities are immaculate.
Remember to get you firewood locally as they do not sell fireworks at the campground.

Enjoyed our vist. But camp site 29 should be closed. The eagles nest made it impossible to sit outside. Our trailer and our pickup were covered in eagle droppings. Disappointed in this one site. Otherwise a very nice campground.

My Husband an I had made this reservation with relatives. Our last camping experience here was not too favorable, as we had a window shot out of our camper by the people mowing the grounds. This time the same people were mowing, in a very careless way, going fast, I am sure just to get it done, with no care for the people camping. Going over rocky ground with the dust and rocks flying everywhere.
I have to say that the Ranger, and all the volunteer help are very nice and informative. We enjoyed visiting with them and the other campers.
But, please get someone else to do the mowing in this campground. In our view, and from our experiences, these people from Deer River that do it now, are not the type of people that should be mowing at this park.
