About Sandy Lake

The Sandy Lake Dam and Recreation Area is situated at the outlet of Big Sandy Lake in northern Minnesota, 13 mi north of McGregor, MN. The dam is a part of the Mississippi Headwaters Project, one of the first reservoir systems in the country, and the Sandy Lake Dam structure dates back to 1895. Today the grounds have been developed into a park and campground that is noted for its clean, family-friendly environment and access to fishing and boating on both the lake and nearby Mississippi River. It offers the only public campground and beach on Big Sandy Lake. The area is also a part of the historic canoe route that connected the Mississippi River to Lake Superior and major fur trading companies. Artifacts from the area's long history are kept in a small museum located near the dam.

Love camping here. We have stayed here in several different sites here with no complaints on anything. Been here twice in the last month. Clean restrooms & campsites. Nicely spaced. Free washer & dryer super plus! Camp hosts & maintenance in Sept & Oct of this year were top notch! Super friendly, available to answer any questions we had. Even though they might have been off duty they were willing to help with any needs. Very approachable staff. Being on the lake & easy fishing below the dam, clean facilities makes this campground one of our favorites. Hats off to corp campgrounds.

Beautiful location. Campsites are spacious and well cared for. Campground hosts were attentive and friendly. Our stay coincided with hawk migration so we made the easy drive to Hawk Ridge one day. The campground was also close to Sax-Zim and Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge for more birding options! Really enjoyed just looking out at the beautiful water of Sandy Lake.
