What Guests Are Saying
Frank Russell campground is highly praised for its clean, spacious, and well-maintained sites, including level concrete pads with full hookups and ample room for privacy. Visitors appreciate the beautiful surroundings, well-kept trails, and facilities, making it a favorite for camping with horses and enjoying outdoor activities. While some noted issues like noise from neighboring sites and the need for more on-site staff, overall, guests express a strong desire to return and recommend the campground for a relaxing experience.

Very nice campsite. Equivalent to state parks. Electricity but no sewer or water. But at 20 bucks and I had a great deal. And if you’re a senior like me with your golden pass only $10! Clean very nice

The Mark Twain State Historic Site was a must-see destination that we really enjoyed. The visitor center at the Lake was not that impressive. The grounds at Frank Russell campground are not kept well at all. Weeds were almost as tall as I am with Poison Ivy/Oak abundant. The restroom and showers were not clean - very dirty. Lots of human waste, lots of very large insects and no place to put your clothes or towels on the walls. Stay somewhere else if you plan on going to Mark Twain Lake anytime in the future.

We always stay at Frank Russell when we come up. We have been staying for 17 years.
Haven’t been camping in awhile but we are making up for it now.
The last 3 weekends in a row we have stayed.
I trying to talk my husband into just moving up there. I would love to work for you. I love hiking and taking care of trails and being outdoors.

The campground was absolutely pristine along with large sites that include a picnic table and campfire pit. There are 10 horse stalls that are under cover. The trails are well marked and the scenery is beautiful! I met a lady named Diana cleaning the bathrooms in the horse camp. She was very friendly and helpful in answering my questions as it was my first time there. At least 4-6 more stalls need to be added. 10 is not enough to accommodate when there are 6 trailer sites. Most people bring at least 2 horses per trailer. We definitely will return to this beautiful place!

In terms of the campground, it was excellent: electric hookup worked well, it wasn't crowded so was nice and quiet, lots of tall trees, good clean bathroom with hot water showers. The only thing was that none of the spots are that close to actually accessible water, which is how the lake/reservoir is set up. So, it's a great spot for a night or two, but unless you're fishing or doing something nearby there isn't a lot to do actually AT the campground. Gave it 5 stars because it's still a well run place.

Equestrian camp sites were awesome. Plenty of room to get backed in. Plenty of water hydrants for getting water for the horses. Plenty of hitching rails to tie horses to. The trails were awesome and very well marked. The bathrooms were very clean and well stocked. Nicest facility I have been to. Will definitely be going back.
