About Little Bear Cabin

Little Bear Cabin was built in 1938 and still looks much the same as it did back then. It is available year-round for recreationists, as well as for those who seek a quiet mountain retreat. The cabin can be accessed by vehicle during the summer and fall (June 16th - December 31st) weather and snow conditions permitting, but winter access requires snowmobiling or skiing 10 miles from the paved road. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

We had a great time. We skied up to the cabin and it was a very well-graded ski. Never too steep. The cabin was in very good shape, with plenty of wood, well-kept and clean. We really enjoyed the views into the valley looking at Bozeman. Great spot!

We stayed for one night the day after a 13” accumulation of snow in Big Sky. We weren’t sure how the road would be, but decided to give it a try. FS Road 980 is very popular road and we were able to follow previous tracks all the way until the first gate. After that, we broke trail for about a quarter mile. The code to the cabin is the same as the code to the two gates you need to open to get to the cabin.
The cabin was spectacular. The beds were surprisingly comfortable. The cabin had plenty of wood to keep the wood stove burning and the inside warm, though it takes a few hours to get the temperature up.
The views of Bozeman and Belgrade at night are incredible. This cabin is so well loved and cared for, we felt so lucky to get to enjoy it for a night.

Came up for the night on 8/13 and 8/20. So much fun! We love this cabin in the winter with the snowmobiles and never had a chance in the summer. Equally awesome!

Little Bear Cabin was the perfect getaway for our family of four that wasn't far away - we live just down the road in Gallatin Gateway. The stars aligned when we had a couple of nights off, the cabin was open, and the smoke from regional wildfires cleared.

We arrived on a Tuesday evening in a light rain, which quickly lifted. When the skies are clear, the view is amazing! Weather was beautiful; cabin was outfitted as expected - with a few extras like pots/pans, utensils, etc.

Our girls loved reading outside, sitting by the campfire, and exploring. We hiked/bushwacked into Little Bear Lake, and walked to the rocky point to the west, which also had incredible views.

Wild flowers were in bloom, which was *divine*

We are so thankful for Forest Service cabins & access to Public Lands ~ we can't wait to get back to Little Bear!
