About Madison River (MT)

Madison River Campground is located in southwestern Montana just beyond the banks of it’s namesake river. It is approximately 34 miles south of Ennis and about 45 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. The ten site campground borders a Douglas Fir covered hillside to the back, with the Madison River just across the road, on the front side. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water taps are located near each site, along the one-way road. Visitors enjoy fishing, sight-seeing and nearby hiking and ATV trails. Riverview Campground is only about a quarter mile away and West Fork Campground is less than one mile and both are available on a “first come, first served” basis. Campsite 8 can only be reserved 2 weeks in advance. All other sites can be reserved 6 months ahead of your arrival date, with the next day becoming available for reservations at 8 A.M. mountain time.

We have been coming to Madison River CG since 2000. I would estimate we have visited the CG 17 times, with an average stay of 4 nights. There is more traffic on the highway now then years before and it can be noisy at times with the big rigs going by. It quiets down at night. If I’m walking along the river or fishing, I learn to tune it out. It’s great bird habitat in the campground and on the river. There is an osprey nest across the river from the CG as well as an eagle nest upstream. We usually come in June and sometimes return in September. If you come late September or early October, the sun drops earlier behind the ridge behind the camp and it gets cold. During that time of the year you might consider the CG on the bench just a bit down river before the West Fork cabins. It’s also a USFS campground and it gets more sun later in the season.

Nice campground, right next to river. Minimal road sounds even though close (ish) to road. I had a great experience with my family. Would return.

Nice campground, but go prepared with food. Only one restaurant within 25 miles.

This campground is in a beautiful spot! There was a foot of snow on the ground, and night temps got down below 25. It was very quiet, and we stayed toasty warm in the roof top tent. We enjoyed a nice ride in the side x side, can’t wait to do it again!

We booked it and the GPS showed it inside the park. Our directions took us straight to Madison campground inside Yellowstone where they told us we must've made a reservation at the other park also called Madison outside the park. They were able to get us in but we lost our money paid to the original campground. Unfortunately, no cell service so we weren't able to cancel or get refund. So didn't actually stay at this campground . The Yellowstone employee says this has been happening a lot.
