About Wade Lake (MT)

Wade Lake Campground is located in southwestern Montana on the shore of it’s scenic namesake lake. It is approximately 43 miles south of Ennis and 35 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. The 25 site campground, including two group sites, is situated in a dense Douglas Fir forest on the hillside above the lake. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water taps are provided in each of the two camping loops. The campground is situated on a steep hillside. For many of the sites, particularly in the upper loop, the only flat space for a tent may be in the parking driveway. There is an undeveloped natural-surface boat launch and the lake has a no-wake speed limit. Visitors enjoy fishing, small craft boating, and nearby hiking and ATV trails in the Gravelly Range. Trailers longer than 24 feet are not recommended due to small campsites, narrow roads and tight curves within the campground. Check the driveway length and width before booking to make sure the entirety of your equipment will fit the site. Snow may hinder access in early or late seasons. Cellular service may be available at the top of the hill near the Forest boundary, about 1.5 miles away.  All sites are only available through reservations. To provide reservation opportunities for those who are unable to plan six months in advance, site numbers 6, 13, 17, 20 and 25 may only be reserved two weeks prior to arrival date. Sites 2, 9, 14 and 22 may only be reserved four days prior to arrival. All other sites can be booked 6 months in advance. Each new day becomes available at 8 A.M. Mountain time.

Stunning lake, but extremely busy with day users, so if you’re looking for a quiet campground on a quaint lake, this isn’t the one.

We booked our camp site, #10 on the recreation.gov website and chose a site still available that was closest to the lake. #10 is not close to the lake and is across from the Camp Host. The Camp Host runs his generator making it challenging to enjoy the serenity of camping. There is not a toilet near #10. When we arrived, there were other sites empty and closer to the lake. The next morning, these sites were still not occupied meaning that the individuals who had reserved them were, "no-shows." According to recreation.gov, the camp host is supposed to report all no-shows immediately and after several no-shows on an individuals account, their reservation capabilities will be revoked. I found out that the camp host has not been reporting these no-shows to recreation.gov. Very frustrating.

Great place. Can't wait to return. Be careful when booking. Some the sites are very small for trailers. All work for tents with nice picnic tables. Site is well maintained.

Such a beautiful place. Has a great resort just a short walk away to rent canoes or other small craft. Quiet, off the beaten path, and well kept up.

We rolled up on a quiet mid week day to camp in september. A time when locals love to get out and camp and recreate after the summer craze. We get to the campgrounds that are not busy, and find out to camp you must have a reservation. No cell service. So we set up camp where it seems to be empty and I drive to the top of the hill to go find cell service to reserve the spot, only to find out that there are no available sites, yet it is almost empty. The campground host has left for the season, so what are we to do? Requiring reservations on national forest land is total bullshit. The campgrounds stayed mostly empty despite being "full" as many people who had reserved months ago never showed up. We witnessed other people arriving and having the same experience and packing up and leaving in search of somewhere else to camp. We need to save our national forests and experiences for the people who put in the effort to get there, not just clicking buttons from the comfort of their couch.
