About Downstream (MT)

Downstream Campground is located just below Fort Peck Dam on the Missouri River in northeastern Montana. Recreation enthusiasts and sportsmen enjoy the beauty of Fort Peck Lake's 1,500 miles of shoreline. A variety of high quality outdoor activities are available, including camping, boating, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and wildlife viewing.  Fort Peck Dam, which impounds Fort Peck Lake is the first dam built in the upper Missouri River Basin. The area surrounding Fort Peck was first charted by Lewis and Clark in 1804, and the pristine natural condition of the river and surrounding area awed the renowned explorers. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized the Fort Peck project in 1933, thousands of people from all over the country migrated to Montana during the midst of the Great Depression in hopes of earning a living. Today, Fort Peck Lake is a sportsman's paradise with excellent fishing, wildlife viewing and other countless outdoor recreation opportunities.   For more information, visit the Fort Peck Project Website or call 406-526-3411.

After arriving, we actually left and drove further along for another place to stay. The camp ground was dry grass, not well kept or mowed. We didn’t even check out access to the river and if that offered anything. It just sort of seems that no one maintained anything although it was not a disaster. Just arrived around noon and thought what will we do all day? It’s not even scenic. Had time to continued on our way. No hook ups, but also very inexpensive if you happen to need it for an overnight.

Camp sites were close together. At some sites more than one family was occupying the site and had two to four vehicles some with boats parked crowding our site. The showers and bathrooms are separate The new showers had little water pressure and it took forever to rinse the soap out of your hair. No soap in the bathrooms with covid-19 warnings posted?

This was a wonderful campsite to stay for the night. I had a tent and the site host moved me to a more shaded spot at the temps were in the low 100s and the evening was only going to be in the low 70s. This was a big help. The nearby showers and restrooms were clean and easy to access. I will definitely consider reserving other state park campgrounds. Having a reserved space and quiet hours which are complied with are a welcome benefit. Thanks for making this so easy to schedule and reserve.

Not much to do without a power boat. Kids fishing ponds are algae choked and probably bare of fish. Power house and museum closed except weekends. RV dump water barely flows, and one faucet not working.

We love Downstream Campground. It is our favorite campground from all we have tried. The sites are spaced apart by at least 15 feet giving you privacy from your neighbors. There are lots of large trees providing shade. The bathrooms and bathhouse are very clean. Electricity hookups are available in many sites. Reservations are encouraged as the campground has been full all four years that we have been there. The camp hosts are nice people and we look forward to seeing them each summer. There is a walking path around the whole park that takes you by the water and the campground is close to the Ft. Peck power plant which has a wonderful visitors center that gives the history of the area and building of the dam which was quite an accomplishment in the 30’s. The town of Ft. Peck is up the hill and offers a summer theater with musicals and plays on the weekends. The reservoir is huge and beautiful and contains many varieties of fish including walleye, northern pike, salmon, and bass. We also fish in the dredge cuts when the water on the lake is too choppy. There is a free dump station as you leave the campground and there are a couple of spots to use to fill your water tanks on the property if you are not wanting the extra weight of traveling with your tanks full.

Excellent shelter with electric for coffee pot, etc. Good tables, nice view of lake, plenty of space, close to rest rooms with running water.
