About Wurtz Cabin

Wurtz Cabin is located just south of the Canadian border, on the North Fork Road near the North Fork of the Flathead River. It is listed on the National Historic Register, offering guests a glimpse into the past. It provides access to a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, boating, fishing and viewing wildlife. The cabin can accommodate up to 12 people and is fully accessible. It can be accessed by vehicle, however the North Fork Road is gravel and only intermittently plowed in the winter. Four-wheel drive and chains are recommended for passage during winter months. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities. The majority of the road from Columbia Falls to Wurtz Cabin is gravel, so be prepared for dust during your drive and at the cabin.

Awesome historical cabin and we loved reading about it. Cabin and amenities are all very nice. Tons of space. The fire pit area has beautiful views but is also overlooking the busy dirt road. We were there in spring but I imagine you get quite a bit of dust in the summer.

Wurtz is a nice cabin, but it has gotten dirtier and dingier over the years. There was significant mouse droppings through all of the kitchen and in the living room. The floors and dining table were sticky and generally grimy. There's also not a lot of privacy at the cabin. Apparently people feel that they can walk up to the cabin and ask questions, park in the parking area to take walks across the road, and use the pit toilet. Not sure if I'll be renting Wurtz again,

Wonderful cabin in the Northfork. Clean, comfortable, well stocked. Lights were very easy to operate. So happy to finally get to stay there. It is quite a ways past Polebridge.

It was a delightful step back in history staying at the Wurtz cabin. Most enjoyed was the fire in the wood stove while reading aloud the binder book about Frank and Ella and the story of their lives up the North Fork. This added greatly to our stay, and if the story were available for purchase in book form, we'd buy it to share with others. Our hike on the old road above the cabins was gorgeous, as was the walk onto the flats to the river's edge. We were completely impressed by how everything needed for cleaning was available. One problem I noticed was the wood stove door latch is somewhat broken. It twirls 'round and 'round; it would be easy to think you'd securely latched the door when you actually hadn't. Made us a bit nervous re fire with future guests who may not be as vigilante as us. Two comments: it's my fervent hope that the NF road NOT EVER be paved (easier access = more people = degradation of wilderness experience). #2 - I hear that we're moving towards satellite cell phone coverage nationally (and globally?) - I dread the day when no place on earth is free of technological intrusion. In large part, our time at Wurtz was exceptional because the road wasn't paved and we could not get cell service.
