About Wurtz Cabin

Wurtz Cabin is located just south of the Canadian border, on the North Fork Road near the North Fork of the Flathead River. It is listed on the National Historic Register, offering guests a glimpse into the past. It provides access to a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, boating, fishing and viewing wildlife. The cabin can accommodate up to 12 people and is fully accessible. It can be accessed by vehicle, however the North Fork Road is gravel and only intermittently plowed in the winter. Four-wheel drive and chains are recommended for passage during winter months. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities. The majority of the road from Columbia Falls to Wurtz Cabin is gravel, so be prepared for dust during your drive and at the cabin.

The cabin was great. Enjoyed two nights in Late March ‘21. Plastic covered mattresses are pretty rough, but hey, it’s part of the experience. The gas heater pilot light was not lit when we arrived. Heads up, the Igniter doesn’t work. Use a lighter. Place stayed plenty warm. We too enjoyed reading the Wurtz family story. Tough people. Inspiring to read.

Thanks to the Forrest Service and volunteers. Let us know if we can donate some mattresses :).

Couldn't believe how well plowed the road was right up to the cabin's front door. Way to go, Flathead County! It took a while to get the big space heated up--we were there on a weekend of -20F lows--but it retained heat fairly well once we got it up to temp. Huge thanks to the FS for all their work stocking the woodshed. We ended up sleeping beside the stove for warmth. The gas lamps were a wonderful luxury, and allowed us to read the Wurtz family's story aloud to each other after nightfall. That story is like watching a Cohen brother's movie; riveting and terrifying. Went skinning on some trails and roads. Had a great time. The cabin is well stocked with supplies and goodies. Can't wait to return when it's warmer!

Lovely Wurtz is always a great time. In the winter, I'd recommend having tire chains to make it to Wurtz. We likely wouldn't have made it to Wurtz without tire chains (rain on ice). Excellent forest to explore and don't forget to bring your own wood for the outdoor firepit (the supplied wood is only for indoor fireplace- it seems that previous renters didn't realize this). Kitchen was clean and for the first time we saw no evidence of mice! Can't wait for next time.
