Nice and quiet, not much brush between sites so not a lot of privacy but the sites are roomy and well spaced out. Restrooms were clean and well maintained, but NO LIGHTS in the restrooms, so don't forget your flashlight..

Peaceful location right in middle of Cedar Forest. Everything was clean and good. Only issue is there was no lights in restroom. So you will have to have a headlamp or torchlight.

A bear wandered through just 10 feet from our site! Our site had lots of shade, partial privacy, but no view. Rare sites had partial Mountain View’s.

The campground was exceptionally clean, and our reserved space was clearly marked (we arrived at dusk). It seemed to us that other campers were respectful and honored the quiet time hours.

I had a pleasant stay at Avalanche Campground. Easy access to Going to the Sun Road, walkable to Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake hikes. Heads up, during my stay, the bathroom did not have soap or electricity (bring a flashlight/headlamp!)

Avalanche Lake campground is ideally located; especially, if your visit is focused on the west side of the park. However, there are not sufficient bear lockers. There is one locker for every 4-5 campsites. We've stayed in many other bear active areas at other parks and there has always been one locker per site. Luckily, the bears at Glacier haven't really learned yet (unlike Yosemite) how to break into vehicles, so plan on taking all your food and toiletries in and out of your vehicle constantly. We were a party of 6 so it was a pain. The camp host suggested we put items in our tent. REALLY?!?! I don't want to come back to a torn up tent or worse yet have it torn up while we're sleeping in it. That was the only negative. Beautiful area, campsite was clean and overall quiet. Plenty of tall trees for shade, too.

Avalanche Campground has multiple entry points on the east and west side of the park.
West Side Entrance
- West Entrance – From Columbia Falls, take Highway 2 east to the town of West Glacier (approximately 33 miles (53 km) from Kalispell).
- West Entrance – From Browning, take Highway 2 west to the town of West Glacier.
East Side Entrance
- St. Mary Entrance – From Columbia Falls, take Highway 2 east to the town of Browning (approx. 83 miles/134 km). At the traffic circle, exit onto Hwy 89 north and continue for another 30 miles (48 km). Follow the signage to the St. Mary Visitor Center / Going-to-the-Sun Road.
- St. Mary Entrance – From Browning, take Highway 89 north to Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Avalanche Campground is accessible via Highway 2, which runs east to west near the park, providing access from both Columbia Falls and Browning. The west entrance is reached by taking Highway 2 to West Glacier, while the east entrance can be accessed via Highway 89 from Browning.

Policies & Rules
General
- Food storage regulations are strictly enforced. Grizzly and black bears frequent the area. When not in immediate use, all food, beverages, coolers, cooking utensils, pet food, or other attractants must be kept in a closed, hard-sided vehicle or secured in bear proof storage lockers near campground restrooms.
- Vehicle length limits. Vehicle and vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet (6.5 m) or wider than 8 feet (2.4 m) including mirrors are prohibited between the Sun Point parking area and Avalanche Campground.
- Maximum Stay. Campground length of stay is limited to 14 days.
- Noise must be kept to a low level that does not disturb other campers. Generator use in campgrounds is permitted only during the following times: 8 am to 10 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., or 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Fire Rings Only. Campsites contain fire rings but do not have fire grates for grilling/ food preparation.
- Hammocks. Hammocks must be hung over non vegetated areas using one inch straps or wider. Vegetation may not be trampled to access hammocks.
- Maximum Number of Tents. Campsites allow a maximum of 2 tents per site.
- No Firewood Collection. Firewood collection is prohibited within Avalanche Campground.
- Renting an RV or trailer? Per 36 CFR 5.3, commercial business may not take place inside Glacier National Park. This includes RVs and trailers being delivered within Glacier's boundaries. Renters of these must drive them in themselves.
