The location of Avalanche Campground cannot be beat. It is set in a beautiful old‑growth cedar and hemlock forest, and the setting is truly lovely. We were greeted by a very nice, very helpful park ranger who made us feel welcome. Our site was quiet, shaded, and felt tucked into the woods even though the area is busy.

For tent campers, though, food storage and cleanup were inconvenient. Our site did not have its own bear box, and the shared one — while not especially far away — still added to the inconvenience. Every meal involved trips back and forth with food, cooking gear, and anything scented. It’s doable, but it adds a lot of extra effort to basic tasks. This information is in the website description, but I didn’t quite understand how that would play out. If I had to do it over again, I would plan accordingly.

The dish‑washing sink was also not operational during our stay, which meant walking to a distant working sink. On its own, that’s just a small annoyance, but combined with the bear‑box situation, it made cooking and cleanup feel like much more of a hassle than I wanted to deal with, especially at the end of a long day. In the end, we chose to go out to eat every night rather than deal with the logistics.

The location is excellent — being able to walk to Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake is a huge advantage — and the forest setting keeps the campground cool and peaceful. Quiet hours were respected, and the overall atmosphere was relaxed.

Overall, Avalanche is a beautiful campground with unbeatable trail access. Tent campers should just be aware that depending on your site, food storage and cleanup can be very inconvenient — enough to influence whether you cook at camp or not.

The campground was conveniently located towards the center of Going-To-The-Sun-Road, which mad it easy to plan hikes throughout the majority & make adjustments based on weather! To be a more primitive campground, the facilities were pretty well maintained; just make sure to bring your flashlight when going to the bathroom because there are not any lights.

Avalanche was a quiet pocket tucked into a busy, crowded park! The Park Hosts were kind while still encouraging polite camping etiquette ( observing speed limit, keeping music to yourself). We loved being at Avalanche!

Wonderful small camp ground, we were in B68 and it really didn’t have a tent pad but we made due. Great camp host.

The campground is well kept up and in a very beautiful spot, unfortunately Going-to-the-Sun road was closed at the time so it took awhile longer to get to the campground but it was definitely worth staying at
