Avalanche Campground

No cell service. No showers. Bathrooms are old. Everything seems a bit run down. It's quieter than other campgrounds due to the cedars. At night it is hushed, and in the distance you can hear Avalanche Creek, and above see the spectacular night sky. All the sites are decent. Some more private than others, but fine, especially for a short stay.

The hike to Avalanche lake is relatively easy and flat. It's beautiful as well. You are also not that far from Logan Pass and hikes along Going To The Sun Road. I recommend catching the shuttle, which stops near the entrance to the campground. It's very convenient. Don't drive to the pass if you can avoid it. You will just get frustrated trying to park and waste time. And it's not necessary to drive. The shuttle is great!

It's about a 15 minute drive west to McDonald Lodge, where there are a couple restaurants and a small, minimally stocked camp store. It's about 30 minutes west to Apgar. We've stayed everywhere in the park, and Apgar and Fish Creek have showers and modern bathrooms and are generally much better for camping (especially for RVs). And there is cell service in Apgar. The nearest decent grocery store is about 60 minutes west on Highway 2.

We picked up a mouse (somehow) in the campground! And it was almost impossible to get it out of the car! Beware of critters.

Campsite was great! The bear boxes are shared so I would plan on having more re space in my car for food and kitchen stuff next time. Site were flat and bathrooms were clean. Also worth noting the bathrooms had no electricity so a headlamp/flashlight is a must. There was also a wash water receptacle around the back of the bathrooms which was great!

overall, a pretty good campsite experience. Toilets were pretty rough though. No lights. One stall was in-op. Campsite itself was a bit small.

We had every night reserved except for one. The camp hosts were so kind and let us stay in an "emergency" site.

Avalanche was a nice-sized campground, quiet, but convenient to some walks and hikes. We hiked to Avalanche Lake and enjoyed that a lot, also took the nature walk and enjoyed the poetry and informational signs. We chatted with an outstanding young employee, I believe her name is Serena Wurmser, who was so personable and outgoing with us! She knows a lot about the natural environment and answered some questions and was kind enough to answer some personal questions I asked about her future plans. Please tell her she enriched our visit and is very appreciated by us.

The access road from Apgar to Avalanche is in a bad shape, hopefully this will be repaired and fixed for the next season. Overall experience at the campsite was excellent.

Toilet paper but no soap. Stay at a different campground if you want soap but no toilet paper.

A very nice campground in the park. The hike to Avalanche Lake was excellent!
Since there were a couple of days of rain prior to our arrival the burn ban was lifted and we were able to have a campfire. We found out that they sell firewood at the Lake McDonald general store down the road and lucky for us they were open until 9 pm.

A beautiful site, easily connected to the superb shuttle system. Well maintained.
