We loved this campsite the most of our whole trip. We tent camped from the east side to the west side of the park, at several different sites. This one was quiet, had nice shade over our site, had a view of mountain peaks, showers, clean bathrooms.. it was perfect. It was easy to get up, drive over to the Avalanche/Trail of Cedars parking lot & get on the trail before the crowds. Highly recommend.

We stayed at Avalanche Campground while towing a 25-foot travel trailer with a Ford F-150, and overall it was a fantastic experience. We reserved Site A-27, which turned out to be a great choice. The site was easy to get into, had the trailer door facing the road, and included a picnic table and fire ring. We didn't end up using either because we spent most of our time hiking, but they were in good condition.
One of the biggest advantages of this campground is its location. The Trail of the Cedars begins right next to the campground and continues to Avalanche Lake. That hike alone made the stay worthwhile, with beautiful waterfalls, towering cedars, and incredible scenery.
One thing to keep in mind is the size of your RV. Most campers were in tents, camper vans, pop-ups, or shorter motorhomes. Our 25-foot travel trailer felt like one of the larger rigs in the campground. The reservation website lists a maximum length of 30 feet for many sites, and while I had read that some could accommodate a little more, I still took a chance. Site A-27 handled our setup without any problems, and I think A-26 would also work well for a similar-sized trailer. I probably wouldn't want to bring anything much larger.
If you're looking for a quiet campground with immediate access to one of Glacier National Park's best hikes, Avalanche Campground is an excellent choice. We'd definitely stay here again.

Nice shady clean campsites. Great to be able to hike out from campground. No showers or dump station. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Avalanche Campground has multiple entry points on the east and west side of the park.
West Side Entrance
- West Entrance – From Columbia Falls, take Highway 2 east to the town of West Glacier (approximately 33 miles (53 km) from Kalispell).
- West Entrance – From Browning, take Highway 2 west to the town of West Glacier.
East Side Entrance
- St. Mary Entrance – From Columbia Falls, take Highway 2 east to the town of Browning (approx. 83 miles/134 km). At the traffic circle, exit onto Hwy 89 north and continue for another 30 miles (48 km). Follow the signage to the St. Mary Visitor Center / Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Avalanche Campground is accessible via Highway 2, which runs east to west near the park, providing access from both Columbia Falls and Browning. The west entrance is reached by taking Highway 2 to West Glacier, while the east entrance can be accessed via Highway 89 from Browning.

Policies & Rules
General
- Food storage regulations are strictly enforced. Grizzly and black bears frequent the area. When not in immediate use, all food, beverages, coolers, cooking utensils, pet food, or other attractants must be kept in a closed, hard-sided vehicle or secured in bear proof storage lockers near campground restrooms.
- Vehicle length limits. Vehicle and vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet (6.5 m) or wider than 8 feet (2.4 m) including mirrors are prohibited between the Sun Point parking area and Avalanche Campground.
- Maximum Stay. Campground length of stay is limited to 14 days.
- Noise must be kept to a low level that does not disturb other campers. Generator use in campgrounds is permitted only during the following times: 8 am to 10 a.m., noon to 2 p.m., or 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Fire Rings Only. Campsites contain fire rings but do not have fire grates for grilling/ food preparation.
- Hammocks. Hammocks must be hung over non vegetated areas using one inch straps or wider. Vegetation may not be trampled to access hammocks.
- Maximum Number of Tents. Campsites allow a maximum of 2 tents per site.
- No Firewood Collection. Firewood collection is prohibited within Avalanche Campground.
- Renting an RV or trailer? Per 36 CFR 5.3, commercial business may not take place inside Glacier National Park. This includes RVs and trailers being delivered within Glacier's boundaries. Renters of these must drive them in themselves.
