This is a treasure but be prepared to bring some necessities. If the solar battery is not fulling charged, you’ll be in the dark unless using the fixed propane sconces. It’s recommended to bring your own light sources & batteries. The battery operated lanterns at the cabin haven’t worked for weeks. Bring your own trash bags and perhaps a small bit of dish soap. There was none during our stay

Area is fabulous! Have been going for years. The cabin is in tuff shape 😟. Solar has not worked for 4 years. Tons of snow on roof and no attention to it. People come in thinking there is water—- not your fault but find it interesting. ?
No journal to write in. No paper. No pen. Stove is difficult to use as parts are missing. Could be dangerous. Does not have the care and charm it used to have 🫣🥴😟. Would always come back as it is our back yard. Lucky to call it home. It needs some TLC.

The kitchen needs a new can opener and the Host white board needs a new dry erase pen.
Otherwise it was all good.

I have stayed at Gordon Reese numerous times throughout the past several years. It is an amazing place to stay and for the most part well taken care of. Although there are solar lights, they weren't working which is fine if you remember to bring your own light. Lanterns and flashlights were available, but none had working batteries. We did use the propane lanterns, but one had the globe down, and the mantle missing. We appreciate the abundant amount of firewood, and the trash bags, pots, pans, etc...that are provided.
Again, a most wonderful stay, but need to stay on top of those things or add into the description - definitely bring your own lights.

This has to be the best cabin we have stayed in.
It is built to accommodate X Country Skiers but you can use it in the summer season.
You can really unwind and relax here, it is very private. There are a lot of points interest near by.
I will probably return here often

From Wisdom, travel west on Highway 43 for 26 miles, the parking area is located at the top of Chief Joseph Pass. The route has many signs. Maps of the area may be purchased by calling the Wisdom Ranger District.
Gordon Reese Cabin is accessible via Highway 43, which provides the primary route from Wisdom, located approximately 26 miles away.

Policies & Rules
General
- Guests must bring their own water for drinking, cooking and cleaning. During the winter season (Dec 1 - Apr 15) snow can be melted for use in the cabin, but should be treated to remove bacteria.
- This facility is located in a remote area; before making a reservation, become aware of bear, water and weather safety (including avalanche danger).
- Guests should be aware that there is a risk of exposure to hantavirus when visiting remote cabins; click here to learn more.
- All garbage and food must be packed out.
- Learn more about the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest.
- Don't Move Firewood: Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site. Firewood for the warming stove is provided on site. For more information visit dontmovefirewood.org.
- You will have access to the lock combination code once your reservation is confirmed. No need to call the Wisdom District Office for the padlock combination. During the winter season the main floor of the cabin serves as a warming shelter during the day; overnight guests rooms are located on the upper level.
- Look for the Bitterroot XC Ski Club website and facebook page for the latest XC ski trail grooming report. Ski trail grooming takes place from Dec 1-April 14 each year with grant funds awarded to the Bitterroot XC Ski Club and Lost Trail Powder Mtn. Ski Area.
- Please do not bring dogs onto the Chief Joseph ski trails during the winter. Nearby Forest Service Road 1260 is a multi-use winter trail where visitors can ski and showshoe with dogs. Backcountry ski trails on the south side of MT Hwy 43 are also great places to ski with your dogs.
- Each visitor group is responsible for cleaning and disinfecting the cabin. The Beaverhead-Deerlodge NF checks on the cabin intermittently during the reservation season and cannot guarantee the sterilization of facilities or prevention of disease transmission during the COVID-19 pandemic.
