About Gordon Reese Cabin

Gordon Reese Cabin provides a modern, well-equipped place to stay while enjoying the scenic western Montana mountain ranges. During the summer a variety of recreational opportunities exist in the surrounding area, including hunting, hiking and viewing abundant wildlife. The cabin is a feature along the Lewis and Clark Trail. During the winter months the Gordon Reese Cabin and surrounding areas transform into a winter wonderland. Surrounding the cabin are 19.9 mi of cross-country ski trails for which visitors enjoy various levels of difficulty. Gordon Reese Cabin is available as a warming hut to the public during the day, meaning the renters of the cabin do not have exclusive use of the facilities and are expected to act in a welcoming manner. The upstairs sleeping area can be closed off to provide limited privacy during the day when the cabin is used as a warming hut. In the summer, the cabin can be accessed by a short, level hike from a parking area less than a mile away. In the winter, the cabin is available by cross-country skiing the same distance. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

The Gordon Reese Cabin is definitely a star on the forest service cabin rental opportunities list. It is well constructed and has many amenities. During winter ski season, this cabin main floor is shared with the public as a warming shelter and gathering spot for anyone that ventures to it. There is a sink with a French drain for gray water. There is a propane range and a variety of cookware, including a percolator. There are solar lights and propane lights as well as a variety of battery operated lanterns. Be sure to bring a flashlight and/or headlamp for personal use, and for going out at night. There is a wood stove that generously heats the interior of the cabin as well as an ample supply of firewood available. The deck on the east side of the cabin is welcoming and the views to the Pioneer Mountains are beautiful. There are pit toilets at the parking lot and near the cabin. They both get heavy use. The result is a towering poop-cone or shitsicle lingering below.

Beautiful ski in cabin (easy) surrounded with miles of groomed trails. Sleeping quarters upstairs are very comfortable. We have only stayed here during the Winter season. Highly recommended!

We enjoyed our stay at the Gordon Reece Cabin, enjoying the groomed cross country trails and cozy cabin. Be sure to bring enough drinking water it takes a lot of melted snow to fill a water bottle. Also, bring a headlamp or some kind of lighting if you spend the night as the solar battery may not last the evening.

I was not able to stay at the cabin due to a bad windstorm that blocked the route to the cabin, and presented unsafe conditions for being in the woods.
