What Guests Are Saying
Thomas Canyon Campground is praised for its stunning views, peaceful atmosphere, and excellent hiking opportunities, making it a favorite for many visitors. Campers appreciate the clean facilities, proximity to nature, and the soothing sounds of the nearby creek. However, some concerns were raised about maintenance issues, including a lack of camp hosts and cleanliness of restrooms, which detracted from the overall experience.

The Ruby mountains are so pretty and lush in early summer.. We were wishing we had our screen shelter as the bugs were out.. Not a lot of them but a few mosquitos, a few biting flies.. It was still very green with water flowing by our campsite. The bathrooms were clean.. so nice to that there wasnt footprints on the toilet seats and paper on the floor.. The dumpsters were not overflowing, fellow campers seemed friendly and considerate of others.. Just a pleasant, relaxing stay.. Hopefully we have more time to hike next time there.. Though relaxing by the river wasnt to tough.. As a plus, as someone that spends a lot of time in the eastern sierra,, its was nice to not have to deal with bears in camp

I was amazed in the Thomas canyon, beautiful, remote mountains with a lot of hiking trails. The campground was clean, we had good luck: our neighbors were quiet, the stay was very enjoyable. No cell service ( AT&T and T-mobile), no WiFi.

there needs to be more information about the size of the RV spaces. Even though we picked one that was allegedly the right length according to the map, it was impossible to back our trailer into it be cause of the approach angle of the campground road and the bushes.

By far the prettiest and best campground I've been to in a very long time. Awesome spot.

First, the Ruby Mountians are a true beauty with great hiking and scenery. Overall the campground is quite nice. However, site 6 is not all that desirable for a handicapped person or anyone else. It's a handicapped site with no shade from 1-4:30pm, no tent pad...handicap people can use tents, the fire pit is stuck in the corner such that at most two people could sit by it and the picnic table is not handicap accessible on the left end while the right end is near the fire pit.

Absolutely love Lamoille Canyon and the Ruby Mountains! Campsite is beautiful and close to trails! Love hearing the stream flow at night. Drinking water is clean and very accessible.

This was our first time visiting the Ruby Mountains and Lamoille Canyon in N. Nevada. There are two campgrounds in this section of the Ruby Mountains - the main one (and only one open at the end of June) is Thomas Canyon Campground, about a 45 minute drive from Elko. It is a hidden gem - a smallish campground with secluded, campsites, many of them situated along Thomas Creek or its tributary creeks. The beautiful canyon walls and cliffs loom above the campground and the sunset, alpen glow on the high peaks are nothing less than stunning.
We spent three enjoyable nights/two and half days at Thomas Canyon Campground. On our first morning, we hiked to Lamoille Lake on the stock trail (may be difficult for some hikers due to the multiple stream crossings and in late June, some snow fields). On our second morning, we hiked the easier trail to Island Lake, hoping to spot the elusive Himalayan Snowcock despite our late start. Both hikes are short ( a mile and half each way) but with considerable elevation gain (being acclimated to the higher elevations here is helpful). These glacier-carved small lakes above 8,000 feet elevations are scenic and well worth the effort. And, if one is familiar with any of the steep, switch-back trails on the flanks of the eastern Sierra Nevada, the Island Lake Trail at least is relatively easy in comparison.
We experienced thunder and lightning storms two of the three nights during our visit. Two locals we encountered on our hike to Island Lake commented that such rain events were a bit unusual. Fortunately, the days were sunny and not too hot during our stay.
One other factoid that might be surprising to some - there are no bears in the Ruby Mountains, or so we were told by others. Bears inhabiting areas to the north or south would have to cross large expanses of the Great Basin desert to get here without any appreciable sources of food. Hence, no need for storing food in bear lockers!
