Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Great place to camp, dramatic scenery!

Lava flows were fantastic. Campground well maintained. Easy in, easy out. Amazing sunsets. A little remote, town nice but small. Would go back.

As usual bathhouse and dump station very clean. Updates to bathhouse are beginning. Nice location. Nice property.

Really good place overall! Nice sites that don't feel packed close together and appear reasonably level (although #6 is pretty substantially sloped, which the reservation site warns about), wonderful hiking/walking paths and nature trail, beautiful views! Lots of wind (naturally, especially considering it was March). Shower and restroom facilities seem pretty new but reflect some structural problems that make them seem old, which is sad, and some of the nature trail narrative boards are pretty badly faded.

This is a must stop for everyone in this country. It is beautiful, So beautiful that one day is not enough you need to plan to spend 2 to 3 days to really enjoy. The site is well-maintained and pet friendly. The lava walk is very informative And maintained

Totally enjoyed the campground. Talked with the very friendly visitor center host. We did the walking hike through the lava field. The dump station way not functioning fully, not all the hoses were working, most likely because it did get down to 24 degrees the night we were there. Definitely that best BLM campground that I have ever stayed at, both hot restrooms and showers.

We stayed at site 9, which is right across from the dump station and restroom and the camp host. These are large sites with more than enough room between you and your camp neighbors. There is an awesome walking trail through the valley of lava rock! Definitely worth the drive. The book store was never open. The camp host was very friendly and helpful. The sunrises and sunset are memorable. You are up on a hill so you look down upon the lava rocks, you will also catch a nice breeze.
No shade for the rvs but there is a pavilion for each site down a small hill with a table and fireplace. The stores in that area do not sell firewood, plan to pack in your own from larger towns nearby. Close enough to ruidoso for daily drives for adventures. Very quiet and relaxing area.
