Valley of Fires is a sublime experience! Whether you want a couple of short, beautiful and unique hikes through the lava flow and surrounding hills, or an extended camping experience, VOF can't be beat. First and foremost, it is quiet, quiet, quiet. Not just the site, but the surrounding area. There's a deep quiet that stills the spirit. The RV sites and the Tent sites are spacious, each unique and beautiful. The large shower facilities are very accomodating, warm, have nice showers and sinks, with plenty of room. The Visitor Center is nice, as well. A small book/gift/map store is included, along with access to very friendly volunteers and rangers. This is a simple, very relaxing place. Carrizozo is 4 miles away, with supplies and gas. Three Rivers Petroglyphs site is not too far and well worth the day drive.

While we haven't stayed in very many BLM campgrounds that are developed like this one, Valley of Fires is undoubtedly the best we've seen. Most all the sites have great views of the lava fields and the surrounding mountains.
The 25 sites offer asphalt pads, water and electricity and there's a dump station centrally located. The shower house is spacious, also centrally located and very well maintained. I might add the shower house is also heated.

What a beautiful rugged landscape! Good sites, level, nice covered picnic tables, large bathroom, showers, congenial camp host. The walking trail among the lava fields was a highpoint for me. We would recommend this campground to any nature lovers. Be prepared, the wind is phenomenal - whoever named Chicago the Windy City has never been to the Valley of Fires!

This was a surprise for us. First we came up to the lava field then saw a sign for Valley of Fire. Out of curiosity we decided to check it out not even realizing it was a campground.
Nice paved sites, covered picnic tables and great views.
The shower house was clean with plenty of hot water.
Needless to say, even though we had intended to drive a few more hours before stopping, this was too good to pass up.
