The RV campsites at this campground are up on a ridge, and it can get windy. The tent campsites are lower, sheltered by the lava flow, but wind was definitely an issue for us in our early spring tent visit. The camp host is meticulous about keeping the campground maintained and in good order. All of the tent campsites had individual garbage cans. Most of the bathrooms were pit toilets, but there was a main bathhouse with running water and showers (free for campers - $6 for visitors).
The visitor center was staffed by an amazing volunteer during our stay, although the visitor center doesn't appear to be open as regularly as it had been in the past. There are lots of attractions in the area in addition to the lava flow, including White Sands National Park (1.5 hours away), and Three Rivers Petroglyphs (30 minutes). The lava flow paved walkway was a worthwhile introduction to the area.

Our 1 night-stay was great. The spot was very adequate with plenty of space between RVs. The host lives on the property. We got to see plenty of stars.

The campground was easy to check in to. The camp host greeted us. We did not use the bath house or restrooms so I cannot comment on them. The site was reasonably level. We had no electric or water at the site so I cannot comment on it. The trail through the lava field was interesting. The campground was quiet at night. I would stay there again.
