Cape Point Campground sites have a shortened reservation window. Due to the ground saturation and potential for flooding we encourage you to check the sites prior to paying. Cape Point Campground is centrally located to all of the attractions on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The campground puts you within walking distance of arguably the best fishing and surfing on the east coast.

Very clean and well kept. The well kept grass is a very welcome alternative to Orange inlet and the horrific sand spurs at Frisco. Bathrooms and showers were very nice. its a fairly protected spot though winds are always an issue with the grill's. Have stayed at all three and this would be my choice hands down. While it doesnt bother me, the only thing to consider is the lighthouse at night.

We stayed 7 nights at site J25 (September 2022) which is toward the rear of campground with great beach access (short drive to beach parking lot or nice long walk). Sites are well spread out and only a handful of other RVs and tents.
Easy in and out to water / dump station on Lighthouse Road (the main road) leading to campground. There is quite a bit of traffic (people fishing and not staying at the campground) that uses the campground loop road to access the beach/off road vehicle roads.
We will definitely return to this campground in Spring or Fall.

Large roomy campground close to the Hatteras Lighthouse. Well cared for. Paved pads. No hookups. Water available in each loop. Bathhouses and cold showers available.
We have seen geese, deer, rabbits and muskrats. Surf can be heard from the campground and the lighthouse beam sweeps through the campground at night. The Lighthouse area is a short bike ride away within the park with a excellent museum and a gift shop. The lighthouse is currently undergoing a periodic renovation and will re-open for climbing when it is finished.
There is fishing, surfing and swimming at the beaches. You can drive on the beaches in many places. A permit is needed.
There is one little problem in that the campground does go partly under water perhaps once per year. There are usually still dry spaces though.

Seeing the deer and other wildlife at the campsite was awesome. The activities arranged by the Rangers made it a great learning experience. I especially enjoyed the stargazing stories by the Rangers on the beach at night. I learned about not only the stars but how light pollution affects us all. I recommend everyone attend on a clear night and see the milky way while next to the ocean.

We stayed just for one night, but we had one of the best camping experiences there. Because of the great location of the place, we're able to see beautiful starry sky and fireflys. The campground is also close by to the lighthouse and the nice beach. For breakfast you should go to orange blossom bakery.

The grounds are well kept. The only downside, which is totally understandable, there is no hot water.

Policies & Rules

General

  • The campground is in a low lying area that floods easily after a heavy rain. Reservations may be canceled with limited notice.
  • Camping is limited to a total of 14 days of camping between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Making reservations under another name or account to circumvent the 14 day restriction is prohibited.
  • Generators must be turned off during quiet hours.
  • Wood fires are not permitted in the campground. Only charcoal cooking fires are permitted in a grill, stove or other self-contained unit.
  • A fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other materials including, but not limited to, flammable liquids, garbage, fireworks, plastics, aerosol canisters, batteries, or other manufactured or synthetic materials, is prohibited.
  • There is a limit of 6 persons per site, a maximum of 2 cars, or 1 car and 1 trailer, and a maximum of two tents.
  • Pets are welcome but must be on a 6' leash at all times. Electronic collars are not considered a leash. Pet excriment must be picked up and disposed of in trash recepticles.
  • Biting insects are prevalent in the summer months, therefore netting and repellent are recommended.
  • All equipment must fit on the site pad; large RVs over 25 feet may have to park second vehicles in auxiliary parking away from the campground, or purchase an additional campsite. Vehicles cannot park on the grass.
  • All campsites are exposed and subject to weather extremes. There are no shaded sites in the campground.
  • The Access Pass and both the Senior Annual and Senior Lifetime Pass are the only passes that provide a discount on the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party. The discount does not apply to utility hookups. The pass discount must be applied at the time of the reservation; it cannot be applied retroactively.
