Cape Point Campground sites have a shortened reservation window. Due to the ground saturation and potential for flooding we encourage you to check the sites prior to paying. Cape Point Campground is centrally located to all of the attractions on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The campground puts you within walking distance of arguably the best fishing and surfing on the east coast.

Arrived and the campground was 90% flooded. No problem because I know what to expect here. I found a dry site and paid online for 4 nights. After my first night, I received an email the
Campground was closing because of flooding. Thought it was odd because there was no rain in the forecast. Anyways I moved to Frisco the next day at an extra $8 per night. The rest of the week I fished the point and the rest of the campers never left. There was even someone in my dry site. The campground obviously did not close so why did I get an email? Were the rest of the campers freeloading? Why was I punished for following all the guidelines. I spent over $150 for the week and others didn’t probably didn’t spend a nickel. It’s unfortunate because I have no problem supporting federal parks but the lack of staffing at this campground makes it a free for all.

Well, there had been a great rainstorm and the campsite I picked was flooded, like 4” water. The ranger allowed me to move to higher ground. Cool showers. I was warned about a robust community of cottonmouths in the campground and advised to bring my flashlight after dark. I saw a crushed snake on the road and a snake skeleton nearby, so sure, I was careful. Nice quiet campground, very clean and peaceful. Yes, the rangers patrolled regularly.

The weather was outstanding. Fishing was decent. No surf to speak of but that is always a roll of the dice on my trips. The only aggravation was making a reservation only to find when I arrived that this site that I had chosen was flooded. I realize it’s difficult for the Park Service to keep up with what sites might have become flooded during a recent rain event. But then I encountered the administrative problem of being able to cancel a reservation if it was made within two days of your arrival. We were able to select a different site and with calls to the reservation service and Manteo plus conversations over a couple of days with two different Rangers we were able to get the site that I had paid for moved from our original site to the new one we had picked out. We did notice that the park service finally changed the rule to first come first serve. Drive-through pick out a site then call in your reservation. I believe that is probably the best approach. I love staying at Cape point and prefer it over Frisco. Cape point is close to everything that I like to do whenever I come up to camp. Please do not consider going back to closing that campground after Labor Day. The best time of year is October November up there. I do not mind when half the campground is flooded there are typically always sites that can be found that are dry. Once again please continue to keep Cape point open into the Fall months. It’s easy to post a sign at the entrance informing arrivals that sites may be underwater but you’re free to drive through and choose a site that suits you and call in your reservation. I think there are a lot of folks that love that place that would be more than happy to do it that way.

There was a lot of standing water, but I was still able to find dry areas. The restroom was very clean and well-lit. Checking in and paying online was really easy. I loved being so close to the Point, and I never felt unsafe.

The campground is in a low lying area that floods easily after a heavy rain. Reservations may be canceled with limited notice.

Camping is limited to a total of 14 days of camping between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Making reservations under another name or account to circumvent the 14 day restriction is prohibited.

Quiet hours are 10:00 pm - 6:00 am - Generators must be turned off during quiet hours.

Wood fires are not permitted in the campground. Only charcoal cooking fires are permitted in a grill, stove or other self-contained unit.

A fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other materials including, but not limited to, flammable liquids, garbage, fireworks, plastics, aerosol canisters, batteries, or other manufactured or synthetic materials, is prohibited.

There is a limit of 6 persons per site, a maximum of 2 cars, or 1 car and 1 trailer, and a maximum of two tents.

Pets are welcome but must be on a 6' leash at all times. Electronic collars are not considered a leash. Pet excriment must be picked up and disposed of in trash recepticles.

Biting insects are prevalent in the summer months, therefore netting and repellent are recommended.

All equipment must fit on the site pad; large RVs over 25 feet may have to park second vehicles in auxiliary parking away from the campground, or purchase an additional campsite. Vehicles cannot park on the grass.

All campsites are exposed and subject to weather extremes. There are no shaded sites in the campground.

The Access Pass and both the Senior Annual and Senior Lifetime Pass are the only passes that provide a discount on the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party. The discount does not apply to utility hookups. The pass discount must be applied at the time of the reservation; it cannot be applied retroactively.
