This is my favorite campground anywhere. If you are lucky you can get a site where you can see the ocean over the dunes. It would be nice if they had water and electric because generators can spoil it for those who want to hear the wind through the trees and grasses. There are several boardwalks to the beach plus 4 wheel drive access is right outside the camp entrance. Be careful of small cacti with large needles, however. Also, be alert for cottonmouths who sometimes like to sun on the pavement. I've only seen them a few times, so watch where you step.

IF TENT CAMPING PLEASE BE SURE TO WEAR A SOLID SOLE SHOE IN ORDER TO AVOID THE SMALL BURR LIKE BALLS. ALSO RECOMMEND THE USE OF FANS IN THE TENT. SOME SITES DO NOT RECEIVE ANY BREEZE

One of my favorite campsites in the state! There was a lot more litter on the beach this time though 😢 please pick up after yourselves and keep the beach beautiful

The campground, bathroom, and showers were quiet and clean. The walk to the beach through the pine forest and over the dunes on the wooden boardwalk was always peaceful and beautiful. The beach got crowded with trucks parking all up and down the length of the beach in front of the campground. Some days it felt like a parking lot, but everyone was polite and respectful.

It was impossible to level our camper at our campsite and difficult to get everything on the pad. We were down a hill so there was no ocean breeze, very hot and humid at night. I would not recommend camping during the summer months.

If you are tent camping be aware the showers do not have hot water and they are basically outside in a stall and many have locks that are broken. Also the park rangers are non-existent after sun down and people make tons of noise with no one to call or complain to.

This campsite is amazing because the power of the ocean, wind, and rain are evident everywhere - it's wild!

North (From Richmond, VA)
Follow I-95 South to Richmond, VA. Take I-64 East toward Norfolk/Virginia Beach, VA. Take I-64 or I-664 to Chesapeake, VA. From I-64, take Exit 291B to Route 168, the Chesapeake Expressway (a toll-road costing $3.00 - $6.00 each way). Once in North Carolina, Route 168 turns into US-158 East. Follow US-158 East through Nags Head, NC to the junction of NC-12 South. Continue on NC-12 South through the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton. Once you reach Frisco take a left on Billy Mitchell Road and proceed to the campground.
West (From Rocky Mount, NC)
Follow US-64 East through Tarboro, Williamston, Plymouth, Columbia, and Manteo, crossing the Alligator River Bridge and the Virginia Dare Bridge. Keep going on US-64 East to Nags Head, NC, going over the Washington Baum Bridge, to the junction of NC-12 South. Turn right onto NC-12 South and you will be at the north entrance to Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Continue on NC-12 South through the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton. Once you reach Frisco take a left on Billy Mitchell Road and proceed to the campground.
South (From Florence, SC)
Take I-95 North to Wilson, NC. Take US-264 East through Greenville, NC and Washington, NC. From Washington, NC, take US-17 to Williamston and follow US-64 East to Nags Head, NC and the junction of NC-12 South. (For an alternate route to NC-12 South, continue on I-95 North to Rocky Mount, NC. Take US-64 East through Tarboro, Williamston, Plymouth, Columbia, and Manteo, crossing the Alligator River Bridge and the Virginia Dare Bridge. Keep going on US-64 East to Nags Head, NC, going over the Washington Baum Bridge, to the junction of NC-12 South).
